    June 2, 2010 (8th grade families only)

Good afternoon Hawfields 8th grade families. I would like to thank all of you who helped make the 8th grade dance a success. Many of you donated time, food, or money to help make the evening a memorable one. I also want to make sure everyone knows about the 8th grade awards program this Thursday night. We will begin at 7:00pm. As communicated earlier this month, each student will be given 3 tickets for their guests. Unfortunately we have to stick to this limit because of the capacity of our gym. We will send the tickets home with students on Tuesday. I would like to express my gratitude for the support you have shown HMS over the past 3 years. So once again, thank you for your continued support and have a great evening.

    May 18, 2012

Good evening Hawfields families. This is your principal, Amy Walker. I want to thank everyone who helped us this week as we administered the End of Grade Tests. We could not have managed all the testing groups without your help. Due to the EOG's, we will be sending progress reports and EOG reports home with students on Monday. We will begin remediation classes on Tuesday for any students who scored a level 1 or a level 2. Retesting will begin the following week on Wednesday, May 30th. Teachers will be uploading their online grades and EOG scores this weekend. Please log in and view the scores with your family. If you have questions, please contact your teacher, an administrator, or counselor. Thank you for your continued support and have a great weekend.

    May 13, 2012

Good afternoon Hawfields families. This is your principal, Amy Walker. I want to remind everyone that End of Grade Tests begin on Tuesday morning. Students will be taking tests on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please make sure your child goes to bed early, eats a good breakfast, and comes with a Can Do attitude. We want everyone to be successful and taking these steps will help us accomplish our goals. Thank you for your continued support and have a good evening.

    May 7, 2012

Good evening Hawfields families.  This is your principal Amy Walker.

    ·         I want to let everyone know that our Academic Boosters will be having a general meeting on Wednesday at 6:15 in our cafeteria prior to our band concert that begins at 7:00.  Everyone is encouraged to attend the booster meeting and stay to enjoy the band concert.

    ·         Also, I am asking if you can possibly help us with our EOG's, please do so.  We are still in desperate need of proctors each day.  Please call Mr. Cain or complete the online form if you can help us on one, two, or all three days.

Thank you and have a great evening.

    April 16, 2012

    Good evening Hawfields families.

The Academic Boosters will receive 10% of all sales. Please come out and supports HMS Academic Boosters! Anyone interested in helping at the event please contact Renea Kenyon; you can call the school for her phone number.

Thank you for your continued support and have a great evening.

    April 9, 2012

Good evening Hawfields families. I hope everyone had a safe and fun-filled Spring break and are rested and ready to return tomorrow morning. I would like to let you know that our End of Grade tests are just around the corner and not only do we have a great deal of work to do to prepare for the tests, we also need proctors - many proctors - during the administration of the tests. If you, a neighbor, grandparent, church member, or any other community member would be willing to help us one, two or all three days of testing, we would be truly thankful. You can call the school and leave a message for Dale Cain, our test administrator, go on our website and locate and complete the volunteer form, or email Mr. Cain or one of the school administrators. I thank you in advance for helping get the word out in our community of the huge need we will have during the testing days - May 15th, 16th, and 17th. As always, I want to thank you for your continued support.

    March 21, 2012

Good evening Hawfields families. I would like to remind everyone that the end of the third nine weeks is quickly approaching.

    ·         We have an early release day next Wednesday, March 28.  Students will be released from school at 12:20.

    ·         We also have our PBIS reward trip next Friday, March 30.  Permission slips went home today with our students who are eligible to attend the trip.  This is a reward trip for students who have earned 90% of the possible points they could earn in their PBIS infraction logs for the third 9 weeks. Please take the time to read the permission slip.  Our students will be going to see the new movie, The Hunger Games.  Many of our students have read this book and are reading the sequels, as well. This movie is rated PG-13.  The reason for the PG-13 rating is due to violent content and mature themes.  The movie has been judged to be appropriate for teens, however, we would like to leave the final decision up to our students’ families.  If you have questions, please contact me or you can view the movie trailers online.

    ·         I also want to remind everyone that our Spring break begins Monday, April 2.  Students will return to school on Tuesday, April 10.

Thank you for your continued support and have a good evening.

    March 4, 2012

    ·         Also, just a reminder that Monday, March 12th, is a teacher workday. Our teachers will be in training on this day, so school will be closed for students on Monday, March 12th.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

    February 9, 2012

This is Principal Amy Walker calling with some important information provided by the Alamance County Health Department. Today we were notified that there is one suspected case of pertussis involving Hawfields Middle. Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, is a bacterial infection that often starts with typical cold symptoms (runny nose, low grade fever, and possibly cough). Over one to two weeks, it usually develops into prolonged bursts of coughing, often with a whooping noise at the end.

ABSS is working closely with the Alamance County Health Department to help identify students who may have been considered exposed to pertussis. Exposure is considered to be standing or sitting for 15 minutes or longer within 3 feet of someone who has the infection.

Students that may have been at risk of potential exposure will be contacted within 24 hours by the Alamance County Health Department to be offered the opportunity of preventative antibiotics. As more information or instructions from the ACHD are available, we will keep you updated. We continue to work closely with and follow the instructions of the health professionals at our local health department.

If you have questions or concerns please refer to the information posted on our Hawfields Middle or on the ABSS website or contact the Alamance County Health Department Communicable Disease Hotline for more information at 336 516-7715. Thank you.

    February 7, 2012

We will also be honoring our honor roll students in our 9-weeks awards programs tomorrow. The 7th grade program will begin at 8:30. The 8th grade program will be at 9:30 and the 6th grade program will begin at 11:30.

I also want to remind everyone that we will be having our Valentine's dance this Friday from 6:00 - 8:00pm. The admission for the dance is $5 and concessions will be sold during the dance. Please remember if a child has been suspended from school or has been in in school suspension, he/she may not attend the dance. All lunch accounts debts must also be settled before attending the dance. As always, thank you for your continued support.

    January 6, 2012

Good afternoon, Hawfields families. This is Amy Walker, Hawfields' principal, calling to share results of our initial interest survey regarding a possible move to the ABSS Year-Round calendar.

For your reference, Hawfields’ results are published on our webpage, and Garrett's results are published on their webpage.

In a nutshell, it does not appear that there is sufficient support among Garrett and Hawfields families at this time to move forward with this initiative.

At Garrett, approximately 52% of students returned the survey.  Of those, 42% supported the year-round calendar, while 32% opposed it. 17% could only support the change if all schools in the zone changed together.

At Hawfields, a higher number or surveys were returned – 92%, while support for the calendar change was lower, at 24%. 43% of Hawfields surveys opposed the change, and 27% would support only if all schools switched.

Though we do not plan to move ahead with a change to year-round calendar at this time, all of us at Garrett and Hawfields appreciate the participation of our families in this important discussion.

    Have a great weekend!

    January 1, 2012

Good evening, Hawfields families. I hope everyone had a restful, fun-filled winter break and are ready to get back to work. We have a tremendous amount to get done between now and the end of year. If you have not returned the year round survey we sent home before the break, please make sure your child returns it when we return to school on Tuesday. We would like to be able to post the results on our website with the next few days. Enjoy your last day of vacation and as always, thank you for your support.

    December 15, 2011

Good afternoon, Hawfields families. This is Amy Walker, Hawfields’ principal, calling to let you know that a preliminary opinion survey and progress report are coming home with your child today. This is just a preliminary survey – no change is a “done deal,” and we won’t even be asking for your final vote for several months. The purpose of this survey is to see if there is enough interest in moving to a year-round calendar for us to continue our conversations. When you receive the survey, please read the instructions carefully, fill the survey out and return it to school with your child by next Tuesday, December 20th. Our goal is to receive a survey from every family, so thank you in advance for participating!

    November 20, 2011

Good evening, Hawfields families. I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving vacation.

    ·         Remember that students will attend school on Monday and Tuesday, but will be off the remainder of the week.

    ·         All 8th graders, remember that you will be visiting the high schools on Monday morning. Parents, if you do not want your child to participate, please send a note to the teacher with your child on Monday.

    ·         We will be donating all lost and found items to a local charity on Tuesday. If your child has any lost article of clothing, coats, or shoes, please tell him/her to go to lost and found on Monday to get the lost items.

    ·         Don't forget that the Hawfields Academic Boosters are collecting Box Tops for Education. If you need a collection sheet, you can download it from the HMS website. Students who bring in a completed sheet will be entered into a raffle for prizes from our boosters.

    ·         Our boosters have also extended the deadline to order HMS hoodies and long-sleeved t-shirts. The deadline is now December 2nd. We have extra order forms in the front office. These would make great Christmas presents for your children, so get your order in before December 2nd.

    ·         Parents, progress reports will be coming home tomorrow. Please discuss your child's grades and then sign and return the progress reports to the teachers on Tuesday.

Once again, thank you for your continued support. Have a great holiday.

    November 14, 2011

Good evening, Hawfields families. I want to make you aware of several events we have coming up this week.

    ·         Our fund raiser items will be delivered on Tuesday. We will be sending the items home with students Tuesday afternoon. If your child sold numerous items, you may want to arrange for him/her to either be a car rider, or you can pick up the items Tuesday before 5:30.

    ·         On Wednesday night, our Academic Boosters are hosting a Zaxby's night from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. Our Academic Boosters will receive 10% of the sales during this event. So please join us for a Zaxby's dinner Wednesday.

    ·         And our week will end with our Talent Show this Friday at 7:00. We have fifteen talented acts for an evening of entertainment. We hope you can join us this Friday.

As always, I want to thank you for your continued support of Hawfields Middle School. Have a great evening.

    October 4, 2011

    Good evening, Hawfields families.

    ·         I want to let everyone know that our Academic Boosters will be having a McDonalds Night this Thursday from 5 pm until 8 pm at the Mebane Oaks Road location. Our Boosters will receive 10% of the cost of your meal during this time. All you need is the HMS flier. We will be sending these fliers home with students and we will be giving them out our football game. We have several teachers and parents who will be working behind the counter, so come out to show them support and help our Boosters at the same time.

    ·         Also, come out to cheer on our softball team. They will be traveling to Woodlawn Wed. afternoon. Our football team has a home game this Thursday. We will be playing the Broadview Bobcats. We hope everyone can join us show them our support.

    ·         Parents, progress reports will also be coming home with students on Thursday. Please take a look at the progress reports, sign, and return them to the appropriate teachers. If you have questions, do not hesitate to contact the teacher to schedule a conference.

    ·         We also have our school pictures this Friday. Fliers should also be coming home with our students this week.

    ·         One more important announcement. If your child has been eligible for free and/or reduced lunch in the past, you must submit a new application each year. If you have not submitted a new application for this school year, your child will have to begin paying for his/her breakfast and lunch on Friday. Thursday is the last day any student can receive free or reduced lunch based on last year's application. If you have any questions, please call the Hawfields cafeteria.

As always, we thank you for your support.

    September 15, 2011

Good evening, Hawfields families. The school year is off to a great start. Our students and teachers are working hard and are engaged in their classes!

    ·         I wanted to remind everyone that progress reports went home with students today. Parents, please look over the progress reports, sign, and return them to your child's teachers.

    ·         Also, a reminder for all of our 6th graders. Documentation of the Tdap Immunization is required by state law and the forms must be turned in no later than next Friday, September 23rd. Any student who does not have the form turned in will be suspended from school until he/she has been immunized.

    ·         I want to invite everyone to our LaCocina Night next Wed., September 21st. LaCocina will donate 10% of their meal purchased between 5 and 8 pm. All you have to do is present the HMS flier. We will be sending the fliers home next week.

    ·         Good luck to our softball team, they will be traveling to Graham Middle on Monday and will take on Broadview at home next Tuesday. Our football team will travel to Graham on Thursday. Come out to support our teams.

As always, thank you for your support.

    May 31, 2011

Good evening, Hawfields families. I have quite a bit of information to share with you this evening. If you miss any of the dates or times, you can check our website for the information.

    ·         First, we will begin retesting for EOG's tomorrow. Students who need to take a retest need to come prepared each day and be on time. We are still in need of proctors, so if you can help, please let us know. The Algebra EOC will be given on Thursday, as well. These students need to be on time for this test, as well.

    ·         The 8th grade dance is this Friday night from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Remember, students who leave early that afternoon, may not participate in the dance.

    ·         We will have school this Saturday. It is the make-up day for Jan. 13th. We will have our field day on Saturday. Students need to bring sunscreen and plenty of water because we are expecting extremely high temperatures. (If students miss the retesting, they may have to take a make up test on Saturday.)

    ·         A few more dates for you to know: our athletic banquet will be Tuesday, June 7th at 5:30. The 8th grade awards program will be Thursday, June 9th at 7:00 pm. The 7th grade awards program will be Friday, June 10th at 9:00 am and the 6th grade awards program will begin at 10:30 am.

Once again, thank you for your continue support throughout this year. If you can help proctor any morning this week, please either come by the school to see if you are needed, or give Mr. Cain or Ms. Williams a call. Thank you and have a great evening.

    May 10, 2011

Good evening, Hawfields families. Thank you to everyone who has come forward to help us next week with our state testing. Even with the volunteers who have come forward, we still need 10 proctors for each day. Just to let you know the main responsibility of a proctor is to monitor the students as they take the test to ensure all testing requirements are met. Most testing situations are over by 12:00 each day. It requires a brief 15 minute training session that we can do the day you proctor for us. Please let us know if you can help any day next week.

    May 8, 2011

Good afternoon, Hawfields families. I have a few reminders of upcoming events and a huge request for your help.

    ·         First, our athletic teams have a busy week. Our soccer teams will be playing at Graham on Monday, at Southern on Tuesday, and at Turrentine on Thursday. Our baseball and volleyball teams will be playing at home on Tuesday and Thursday. Please come out an support the Huskies!

    ·         Also, we are having our talent show on Friday at 7:00 pm. Please come out to support our students and staff as they share their talents.

    ·         As you know, End of Grade Tests will begin in the next two weeks. Some of our students will be testing this week. We need three proctors for these testing locations. If you can help this Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, please let us know. Most of our students will begin testing the following week. We need at least 45 proctors for each day of testing. Thank you to those who have already volunteered, but we still need about 30 people for each day. If you can help one, two, or all three days, your assistance will be greatly appreciated. If you can help on Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday, the 17th - 19th, please let us know as soon as possible. You can go to our homepage and click on the scrolling announcement at the top of the page OR you can call the front office and leave a message. Please help us the next two weeks if you are able and as always, thank you for your continued support.

    February 3, 2011

    Good evening, Hawfields families.

    ·         I want to make sure everyone is aware report cards went home with students today.

    ·         We will be having our awards ceremony on Monday, Feb. 7th for students who made the A or A/B honor roll. The 8th grade assembly will begin at 10:15. The 7th grade assembly will begin at 11:45 and the 6th grade will begin at 2:00. We would like to invite any parents who are able to attend to join us.

    ·         Also, our PBIS trip is tomorrow morning. Students will return to HMS between 11:30 and 12:30.

    ·         On Tuesday, don't forget we have an early release day. Students will be dismissed at 12:20.

    ·         We are also having a dance next Friday, Feb. 11th from 5:30 - 7:30.

Thank you for your continued support. Have a great evening.

    January 24, 2011

I would like to remind everyone that we do have school this Saturday. It is a make up day for the snow day we missed on January 11th. We will be dismissing students at 1:30.

I would also like to remind our students and staff to wear pink on Thursday. We are raising money for the Breast Cancer Society during our last home basketball game Thursday afternoon and would like everyone to wear pink to show their support.

Good luck to our basketball teams. They have two home games this week - Tuesday we will be playing against Southern Middle and Thursday we will play Turrentine.

    January 20, 2011

This is just a reminder that tomorrow is a teacher workday and  school will be closed for students.  You may have wondered why ABSS did not designate Friday, January 21 as a make-up day for one of our recent missed days due to bad weather.  North Carolina state law requires a protected teacher workday at the end of each grading period.  Tomorrow is the protected workday for the second grading period and could not be used as a student make-up day.

Please remember that next Saturday, January 29, will be a make-up day for students.  Dismissal will be at 12:30 for elementary and 1:30 for middle and high schools.

    January 2, 2011

Good afternoon and Happy New Year to all the Hawfields families. I hope everyone had a restful winter break and are ready to return to school to work hard and learn as much as possible.

    ·         I do want to let everyone know that January 24th and February 21st are now student days instead of teacher workdays. Please adjust your calendars at home.

    ·         Also, parents, please encourage your child to check our lost and found during the next 2 weeks. We have numerous coats, sweatshirts, shoes, you name it, in our lost and found. We will be donating all unclaimed items to a local charity on January 21st.

    ·         Please plan to support our basketball teams this week. They will travel to Turrentine on Tuesday and Western on Thursday. We wish them the best of luck.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone back tomorrow. Have a great evening.

    October 31, 2010

    Good evening, Hawfields families.

    ·         I would like to thank everyone who attended our Mega Party this week.

    ·         I would like to remind everyone that this Thursday is an early release day. Students will be dismissed at 12:20. We will have face-to-face conferences in our gym from 1:30 - 3:30 and again from 4:30 - 6:30. Parents will be able to pick up report cards and schedule a time to meet with the teachers, if needed. We hope to see everyone Thursday.

    ·         We will also have our 9-weeks Awards Program on Friday. We will recognize students who have achieved the A or A/B Honor Roll for the first nine-weeks. The 8th grade program will begin at 10:15, 7th grade will begin at 12:00, and 6th grade will begin at 2:00. Parents are welcome to join us for this celebration.

    October 24, 2010

    Good evening, Hawfields families.

    ·         I would like to remind everyone that we are celebrating Red Ribbon Week this week. The purpose of Red Ribbon Week is to help students learn that they should choose a drug-free lifestyle. On Monday, students are asked to wear mismatched or crazy socks. Tuesday is twin day. Wednesday students are encouraged to wear a shirt for their favorite team, and on Thursday students may wear a hat for Hat Day if they purchased a ticket for $1.

    ·         Also our Mega Party will be Thursday afternoon from 3:30 - 6:00. We will have inflatables, games and concessions. We encourage our students and their families to join us for the fun.

    ·         Also, don't forget that Friday is a teacher workday. School will be closed for students.

Have a great evening and thank you for your continued support.

    October 3, 2010

Good afternoon, Hawfields families. We have a busy week ahead of us.

    ·         First, we would like to welcome Mr. Anders, our new 6th grade teacher and Mr. Cook, our new 7th and 8th grade teacher. Mr. Anders took Ms. Motta's position as a 6th grade ELA teacher and Mr. Cook will begin this week working with 7th and 8th grade math and science. This means some 7th and 8th grade schedules will change this week. Mr. Haley and Ms. Grondy will be meeting with students on Monday to give them their new schedules. 8th graders will begin with Mr. Cook on Tuesday and 7th graders will begin meeting with him on Thursday. Letters will also be sent home on Monday with the students who will be moving.

    ·         Progress reports will go home with all students on Wednesday.

    ·         As for athletics, our football team will be traveling to Williams High School Monday afternoon to play their make-up game with Turrentine. Our softball team will play Graham Middle on Tuesday at Hawfields and will travel to Western Middle on Wednesday. The football team will have a home game on Thursday against Graham Middle. Please come out to support the Huskies this week.

As always, thank you for your continued support. Have a great evening.

    September 28, 2010

    Good evening, Hawfields families.

    ·         I want to remind everyone that this Thursday is an early release day.  Our students will be dismissed at 12:20.

    ·         Don't forget that all fundraiser money is also due on Thursday.

    ·         Also, Friday is our Fall Picture Day.  Pictures will be taken of all students and Fall athletic teams on Friday.  Your child received a flyer from Lifetouch regarding purchasing packages.  If you cannot locate the flyer, you can visitwww.lifetouch.com for more details.

    ·         Our football team will be playing Turrentine tomorrow afternoon.  If you are planning to attend the game, remember that Turrentine plays their home games in the Williams High School football field. Our softball team will be playing Woodlawn tomorrow at Hawfields.  Please come out to support the Huskies this week.

    September 12, 2010

Good afternoon, Hawfields families. This is your principal, Amy Walker. We have a busy week coming up this week.

    ·         We have our first home softball game on Tuesday versus Western Middle School. Our softball team will then be traveling to Southern Middle on Wednesday afternoon. The games begin at 4:15 and students who stay for home softball games should have their rides pick them up at the field (Garrett Elementary entrance) by 5:45. Our first home football game will be Thursday afternoon. The Huskies will challenge the Western Middle Braves in their first contest. The 4th quarter will kick off at 4:00. Students who stay after school for the football game should have their parents pick them up at the football field by 5:45. We hope everyone can join us as we support our Husky teams this week.

    ·         Progress reports will be coming home on Wednesday. Please discuss your child's grades and sign and return the progress reports to your child's homeroom teacher.

    ·         Also, please remember to check your child's planner each night to see how many positive stamps they received or if they received any signatures for negative behaviors.

Thank you for your support and have a great evening.

    August 29, 2010

Good evening, Hawfields families. This is Amy Walker, your principal. I want to thank everyone for a great first week of school. As I visited classrooms, i saw great teaching and students who were attentive and participating in the lessons.

    ·         We started our positive behavior program this week and many students have received numerous stamps for on-task behaviors and positive citizenship. Ask your child to see his/her planner and discuss their stamps and what they did to receive the positive recognition. If your child has any signatures in the infraction log, discuss the inappropriate behaviors with your child, as well.

    ·         Sixth grade families, don't forget that North Carolina state law requires all students entering the 6th grade to receive a booster dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccine before the 30th day of school. Middle school students who do not provide proof of the vaccination won’t be able to attend class after Thursday, September 23, 2010 until they bring proof to school. If you have not turned the form in, please take care of this as soon as possible.

Thank you and have a great evening.

    July 29, 2010

    May 26, 2010

Good evening, Hawfields families. This is your principal, Amy Walker. It is hard to believe that the end of the school year is almost here. We have many end-of-the year events that I would like to share with you.

    ·         First, we sent home the EOG results with students on Friday. If your child scored a level one on any of the tests and you do not want your child to take the test again, you must submit the bottom of that form back to the school. Please do this as soon as possible so we can make appropriate arrangements for your child. Students who need to retake the tests are in remediation groups this week and will begin taking the tests again next Wednesday.

    ·         Also, don't forget that Monday is now a student day due to make up snow days, as is next Saturday, June 5th. Monday is a regular day, but on Saturday, we will dismiss two hours early.

    ·         Don't forget our athletic awards program will be Wednesday, June 6th.

    ·         We also will have our 8th grade recognitions on Wed., June 9th beginning at 7:00 pm. The 6th grade recognitions will be June 10th at 9:00. 7th grade recognitions will be June 10th at 10:30. We look forward to seeing you at these programs if your schedule allows.

I want to take the opportunity to thank all of you once again for your support throughout the year. Have a great evening.

    May 17, 2010

At approximately 12:30 this afternoon, our school received a phone call about a possible bomb threat on our campus.  In order to ensure safety of students and staff, we immediately evacuated the building in a safe and orderly fashion, just as we practice for routine fire drills.

School administrators contacted local law enforcement who responded immediately. After a search was conducted, it was determined that there was no danger to anyone on campus, and after a 40 minute evacuation we re-occupied the building to resume our normal schedule.

Please be assured that the safety and security of our students and staff is always of the utmost importance to us. While we regret a rainy day evacuation, we know you will agree with us that the safety of your child should always be our highest priority. Thanks for your support, and have a good evening.

    March 15, 2010

Good evening, Hawfields families.  This is your principal, Amy Walker.

    ·         The lost and found items are accumulating and are becoming a storage issue once again.  Our Junior Civitans are participating in the Goodwill Challenge and we will be donating the lost and found items to this charity.  If your child has lost anything, ask your child to go by Ms. Scott's room to look for it or you are welcome to come by to look for yourself.  We will place the items in the Goodwill bins Thursday morning.

    ·         Also, our students will be participating in benchmark testing next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Please encourage your child to do his/her best during these assessments.

Thank you for your support and have a great evening.

    ·         Hawfields Middle School would like to congratulate Patricia Winslow, who was named Teacher of the Year. Congratulations, Ms. Winslow.

    ·         Parents, we are having an issue with students and chewing gum on a regular basis. The problem with gum is that it ends up on the walls, under chairs and many other places.  Students have been warned about this and it is a infraction in their PBS folder.  Please support us in our effort to keep Hawfields a clean and beautiful facility for your children to learn in.

Thank you and have a great evening.

    February 4, 2010

Good evening, Hawfields families.  This is your principal, Amy Walker.  It was good to be back at school today with the students and I hope we will return tomorrow.  I want to make you aware of some of the rescheduling that we have done due to the recent snow days.

I think that has you caught up on our postponements and rescheduling.  Have a great evening and I hope to see everyone tomorrow.

    January 29, 2010

Good evening, Hawfields families.  This is Amy Walker, your principal.

    ·         Because of the forecast for possible inclement weather on Saturday, the scheduled H1N1 flu vaccination clinics announced for Cummings, Eastern and Graham High Schools have been postponed.  The clinics are rescheduled for Saturday, February 20 from 9 until 11 a.m. We will send reminder messages in advance.  Just to repeat, the H1N1 flu vaccination clinics for Saturday, January 30 have been postponed until Saturday, February 20.

Good evening, Hawfields families.  This is your principal, Amy Walker.  I hope that all of our students had a good first day in the 2nd semester.

    ·         Please be looking for your child's report card next Tuesday.  If you have questions or concerns, please call to schedule an appointment with your child's teachers.

    ·         Also, 8th grade parents remember that tomorrow is the last day to let me know if you do not want your child to participate in the "WAVE" program.  This is a program offered by local agencies focusing on family abuse and how to end the cycle of abuse.  Please send the form back with your child if you do not want him/her to participate.

    ·         I also wanted to let you know that there will be free H1N1 flu vaccination clinics at Cummings, Eastern and Graham high schools on Saturday morning, January 30, from 9-11 a.m. Clinics are for ABSS students attending school in these zones and their immediate family members.   At Cummings High, the clinic will be held in the cafeteria.  At Eastern and Graham High, clinics will be held in the media center.  The vaccine will be provided on a first come, first served basis with no appointment needed, and there is no cost to receive the vaccine. Children run a higher risk of getting H1N1 flu and developing serious complications, so getting the H1N1 vaccination is the best way to keep you and your family healthy.  There is still time to prevent illness this flu season. For more information, check our school website.

Thank you for your continued support.  Have a great evening.

    September 11, 2009

Good evening, Hawfields families and staff.  This is Amy Walker, your principal.  This message is to inform you of some very important information about our school.  During the past week,  we have had an increasing number of students experiencing flu-like symptoms such as fever, sore throat, headache, muscle aches and, in many cases, nausea and vomiting.   These symptoms are generally associated with the Influenza virus.  If your child is experiencing similar symptoms, it is very important that he/she remains home and does not return to school until 24 hours have passed with no symptoms and without continued use of fever-reducing medication.

Under guidance from the Alamance County Health Department, we are taking all necessary precautions to minimize the impact on our students and our school.  We continue to emphasize and practice proper hygiene techniques and the sanitizing of frequently-touched surfaces.  Just as a reminder: thorough hand washing with soap and water and covering the mouth when sneezing or coughing are effective methods for preventing the spread of viruses.

We appreciate your attention to these important safety measures as we work to keep our students, staff, and family members healthy and safe.  Thank you.

    ·         I would like to remind you that Monday is a holiday.  School will be closed.

    ·         Also, Thursday, Sept. 17th is scheduled to be an early release day.  Students will be dismissed 3 hours early.  This means Hawfields will dismiss at 12:20.  If your child is a car rider, please make arrangements for this early dismissal.

    ·         We still have about 80 6th grade students who have not submitted proof of their TDAP vaccination.  Please make sure you send in the documentation ASAP.  Remember that students will be suspended from school after the 30th school day if we do not have this paperwork.

    ·         I also want to let everyone know that our Academic Boosters will have their first meeting Tuesday night in our cafeteria beginning at 6:00.  Please plan to attend this meeting to learn how you can be involved in your child's middle school years.

    ·         The last item for this evening is to let you know that a permission form was sent home Friday afternoon regarding President Obama's speech next Tuesday.  Please ask your child to share this letter with you.  If you decide you do not want your child to participate in this activity, please sign and return the note Tuesday morning.

    August 28, 2009

Good evening, Hawfields families.  This is Amy Walker, your principal.  We are very fortunate at Hawfields to have such great students and parent support.

    ·         As students enrolled over the past week, we discovered that the number of students who are eligible to take Algebra 1 is much larger than we anticipated.  Therefore, we are going to create two Algebra classes instead of one.  We will also continue to have the pre-algebra class for our students as well.  This means several of our 8th grade students will have schedule changes next week.  New schedules will be given out on Monday to students who are affected by the changes that had to be made.  We disrupted students' schedules as little as possible.  If you have questions, please let us know.

    ·         We are also going to begin the online Spanish class this week for the students who contacted me with an interest.  If your child has changed his/her mind about taking this class, please let me know so I can open the opportunity for others.

Have a great evening and thank you again for your support.

    August 27, 2009

    To all 6th Grade Parents:

This is an important reminder that all 6th grade students are required by law to provide proof that they have received a booster vaccination of Tdap before the 30th day of school.   This vaccine provides protection against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (or whooping cough). Proof of the vaccination must be provided by September 23rd, or your student will not be able to return to school until proof is presented.

The Alamance County Health Department is offering Tdap vaccinations for students with no appointment necessary between the hours of 8 a.m. until 11 a.m, and then again between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday through mid-September.  On 3 upcoming Mondays, August 31, September 14, and September 21, the health department will also stay open until 6 p.m. to provide walk-in service with no appointment necessary.

The Alamance County Health Department is located at 319 North Graham-Hopedale Road in Burlington.  For more information, the health department phone number is (336) 227-0101.

Please take advantage of these opportunities to get your child vaccinated at no cost before the deadline of September 23rd.

    August 24, 2009

Good evening, Hawfields families.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone at school tomorrow morning.  Just a few reminders.

    ·         Students should not be dropped off in the mornings before 7:15 am.

    ·         Our tardy bell rings at 8:10.  This means students should be in their homerooms no later than 8:10.

    ·         When students arrive in the morning, 7th and 8th graders can check the homeroom roster in the gym.  6th grade students will report directly to the cafeteria.  Homeroom rosters will be there as well.

    ·         We will dismiss at 3:20 each afternoon.  Parents, please be patient in the car rider line.  We do not allow students to walk through traffic.  If you park your car, you need to walk over to the loading area to pick up your child.  Our students' safety is our priority during the dismissal process each day.

We are excited about the new school year and look forward to working with you and your child.
