    What is CDM?

Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) is an option for obtaining high school course credit for standard level courses (Honors, Advanced Placement, Healthful Living, and some Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses are not eligible) in North Carolina. CDM is the process by which a local school system shall, based upon a body-of-evidence, award a student credit in a particular high school course without requiring the student to complete classroom instruction for a certain amount of seat time. "Mastery" is defined as a student's command of course material at a level that demonstrates a deep understanding of the content standards and application of knowledge.

    Who is eligible for CDM?

All students for high school courses within the recommended scope and sequence are eligible.

There are 2 Phases of the CDM Process:

    Phase 1:   A Standard Examination
    •  EOC – Level 5 (Scale Scores: Math 1 > 264; Biology > 261; English 2 > 165)
    •  NCFEs - 90% correct or higher
    •  CTE Post Assessment – Scale Score of 90 or higher
    •  Local Assessment/CTE Assessment – 90% correct or higher

    Phase 2:   An Artifact

    •  A project that demonstrates the student’s deep understanding of the content standards and skills
    •  Artifacts of any type may be assigned – ranging from three-dimensional to paper-based to electronic to oral interviews

How credits will appear on transcripts once a student passes both Phase 1 and 2 of the CDM process:

    • Students will not receive a letter grade or quality points for the course.
    • Students who successfully complete the process will receive a “pass” result and CDM will appear on their transcripts for the course and the student will be eligible to enroll in the next level course in that subject area.
    • Students who do not earn the course credit will not be penalized. Results of the assessment process will not be reflected in the student’s grades or school transcript.
    • Students may make one attempt to earn credit per course. Retests are not offered.
