ABSS Mathematics Curriculum Mission
AlamanceBurlington School System’s mathematics curriculum emphasizes mathematical reasoning, problemsolving, and meaningful discourse. Students need to experience mathematics through purposeful, problematic tasks that provide opportunities for collaboration. Along with the content standards the mathematical practices guide the instructional decisions.
Mathematical Practices
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.Instructional decisions and interventions should be made based on available data.
Mathematical power is defined as: an individual’s ability to explore, conjecture, and reason logically, as well as the ability to use a variety of mathematical methods effectively to solve nonroutine problems.
