Mr. Kyle Dortch

Mr. Dortch is a North Carolina native, born in Sanford, NC in 1987. Graduating from Western Harnett High School in 2005, Mr. Dortch was involved in several school activities, including four years in band, JROTC, and Beta Club, in each of which he has held student leadership positions.
Mr. Dortch attended college at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where he studied music education. There he marched with the World Famed Blue & Gold Marching Machine, performing with the Cold Steel Drumline, an internationally-touring percussion section, in which he served as a section leader. He also served as a Resident's Assistant, a student advisor to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Chancellor, and helped the evolution of the Greek Life system, where he served as president of his chapter of  Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. During his time in college, he also served as president of the University's chapter of MENC and attended the NCMEA State Convention several times as a student advisor.
Graduating in 2010 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education, Mr. Dortch took over as Director of Percussion his Alma Mater of Western Harnett High School, where he oversaw the development of percussionists in the Marching Eagle Band and the newly-organized Code Red Winter Drumline. Under his leadership, the drumline consistently placed at marching contests in the area and the Atlantic Indoor Association, a winter performance organization. In 2013, Mr. Dortch also worked as the Director of Music at Johnsonville Elementary.
Mr. Dortch took over as the Graham High School Director of Bands since June 2013. He currently writes percussion music as a freelance artist in addition to serving at Graham. He has two children, Kayden and Kalani, and lives with them in Burlington, NC. Mr. Dortch has also served as the assistant director of Gate City Percussion in Greensboro, and the percussion instructor at Southern Alamance High School.
Mr. Dortch is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Ancient, Free and Accepted Masonry, the Percussive Arts Society, the National Association for Music Education, The NC Music Educators Association, The Dalcroze Society of America, the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, the Central District Bandmaster Association, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and other various organization. He is also sponsored by Salyers Percussion and KHS America, which distributes Jupiter Instruments.
