• In honor of Constitution Day, fifth grade students will participate in a Structured Academic Controversy--a day of reading, writing, research and debate. Students will be working in teams to role-play a fictional scenario where a fifth grade student is suspected of gang involvement by wearing gang colors and bragging about being part of a gang. Students will examine the Student Code of Conduct and read news articles about school dress codes, and finally decide the "constitutionality" of a new fictional dress code rule, using our Classroom Constitution and Eastlawn's iLead pledge.
As an extension activity, students will be blogging about the constitutionality of other US laws that affect kids, as proposed by Scholastic.com.
