• Hello! I am Marisa Mensah. I began teaching here at Harvey Newlin Elementary School in October, 2013. I taught kindergarten and second grades last year. This year I will teach second grade and fifth grade, as well as a third, fourth, and fifth grade combo class for newcomers who need basic English vocabulary.
I love teaching English and integrating it with other content areas, like math and social studies. I taught K-8 ESL students at a charter school in Winston-Salem, ESL adults at Guilford Technical Community College in Greensboro, and soon-to-be college freshmen at Ilisagvik College, a tribal college in Alaska. I believe that learning academic English is not just a school skill, but a life skill.
I received a B.A. in English from UNC Wilmington, and a M.Ed. with a concentration in ESL from UNC Greensboro. I enjoy hiking, cooking, spending time with my amazing husband, and traveling. I have been to France, England, Switzerland, Togo, and Ghana, and enjoy incorporating my hobbies into school lessons.
My classroom includes hands-on activities where students can see, smell, touch, hear, and feel objects. We write to pen pals (Alaska, France, Greensboro, Costa Rica), study grammar correction, use music to study poetry and parts of speech, and more!
