• Hello and welcome to the 2021-2022 school year. It should be an interesting one, that is for sure.

(Parents without email on file with ABSS, please click HERE...)

My name is Nick Zaleski. In the Spring 2022 Semester, I am teaching the new Economics & Personal Finance (EPF) course (which I taught last semester) and the new Founding Principles of the US & NC: Civic Literacy (aka, Civics) course.

This is my 19th year as a classroom teacher, my 10th year in ABSS, and my 3rd year teaching at WAHS. Previously, I taught at Cummings HS for 1 year and Broadview Middle School for 6 years, where I was chosen for the 2018 Broadview Teacher of the Year award. Prior to moving to North Carolina in 2012, I lived and taught English as a Second Language in South Korea for 5 years, preceded by teaching at the Line Mountain Jr/Sr High School for 4 years (3 years - Social Studies; 1 year - Alternative Education) and a student-teaching placement in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. Aside from teaching, I have also worked in group homes, wilderness therapy programs, 4 museums & historic sites, as well as in factories, construction, and as a shuttledriver in Alaska. So far, I have traveled to over 30 countries and 30 states, which includes living in 3 other countries (Australia, Scotland, and South Korea) and 2 other states (Pennsylvania and Alaska). I graduated from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania in 2001 with a BS in Secondary Social Studies Education and a BA in History.

I am excited about beginning a new semester and meeting many new faces (actually in-person). However, I must admit that there is a level of anxiety that comes with this year. As we attempt to return to "normal", this school year is still filled with a lot of uncertainty. But with the right attitude and spirit, understanding and compassion, motivation and devotion, we can all persevere together and come out of the 2021-2022 school year with some new skills (independence, self-reliance, self-discipline, new tech skills, etc.) and maybe a deeper understanding of ourselves. Together (students, teachers, parents) we can accomplish some great things!!! I look forward to meeting, getting to know, and teaching & learning from each of you.

In class, we will use physical paper and materials again. However, we will continue to use Canvas as our Learning Management System. If students are absent from class or are missing assignments, all classwork, assignments, materials, etc. will still be accessible through Canvas. You will need to log in through RapidIdentity, PowerSchool, or Clever: Here or Here.

MATERIALS: There will be a combination of physical materials and electronic materials. Assignments will be posted via Canvas. Students will need paper/notebooks, pencils/pens, color pencils, earbuds/headphones, and possibly notecards and highlighters.

Students or Parents, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. My email is: Nicolas_Zaleski@abss.k12.nc.us
