Interim Superintendent Takes Oath in Advance of Tenure
On Wednesday, December 22, Judge Andrew Hanford administered the swearing-in ceremony for Dr. Jim Merrill before he assumes the duties of interim superintendent for Alamance-Burlington Schools, effective January 1, 2022.
The private ceremony was held in the superintendent’s office in advance of the school district’s holiday break with Board of Education Chair Sandy Ellington-Graves in attendance. The Board of Education may hold a formal ceremony in January.
Board of Education announces Interim Superintendent
On Friday, December 17, the Alamance-Burlington Board of Education announced that Dr. Jim Merrill will serve as interim superintendent, effective January 1, 2022. He will lead the district beginning in January through June 30, 2022 as the Alamance-Burlington Board of Education launches a search for the next permanent superintendent to replace Dr. Bruce Benson who announced his resignation effective December 31, 2021.
Merrill has twenty years of experience as a school superintendent, including six years in Alamance-Burlington Schools from 2000-2006, Virginia Beach City Public Schools in Virginia from 2006-2013 and Wake County Public Schools, 2013-2018. He earned his Bachelor degree in English Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Masters in Administration from Appalachian State University and Doctorate degree in Education Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
“I'm excited to be back. I appreciate the board's support and belief that I can assist ABSS while they tackle the toughest job that a board has, which is finding a superintendent," remarked Merrill after the board’s unanimous vote at the special called meeting Friday, December 17. He concluded, “I will work with you individually and as a group and I will work to provide support from the classroom up and the board down.”
Board Chair, Sandy Ellington-Graves, expressed the board’s collective excitement about Dr. Merrill’s return to lead ABSS: “We are extremely fortunate to have the benefit of his leadership as we move forward. Our district has a lot on its plate at this time, and we are very confident in his ability and experience to guide us forward.”
