Welcome to Chorus (7th and 8th) and Music Appreciation (6th)! This is my sixteenth year at Hawfields Middle School. I received my undergraduate degree in music education from Elon University and completed my Masters in Music with a concentration in Music Education from UNCG in 2013. Students involved in the HMS Choral program have enjoyed trips to and performances at The Biltmore Estate, the Carowinds Festival of Music, All State Chorus, NC Honors Chorus, ABSS All County Chorus, MPA (Music Performance Adjudication), Mebane Ridge Assisted Living, and share many in-class concerts during school. 6th Graders will recieve an introduction to Chorus/ Music Theory Concepts while exploring a diverse range of musical topics including Music Technology, African Drumming, Music in Motion (e.g. we keep our bodies MOVING!), and lessons that foster an reconnection to the musican inside all of us.
Additionally, througout the year, Friday "Cultural Nights" are planned wherein eligible Music students and interested parents (per ticket availability) travel together for dinner and a show to DPAC- the Durham Performing Arts Center. Tickets for shows are reserved pending season schedule and group accommodations. All trips and extracurricular opportunities (except for bi-annual Music Showcase concerts) are optional enrichment experiences separate from the academic rigor offered during the chorus/music elective classtime; the HMS Cultural Arts department works diligently to provide learning experiences that extend beyond the rehearsal room walls. Students are encouraged to explore their trip and perfomance opportunities.
Chorus and Band students perform in two required music showcase concerts held in December and May. Dates for these events are provided during the first week of school and do not conflict with HMS sports and/or other after school activities. We also look forward to having some guest clinicians/ musicians come in to share their talents with students during class time and at our concert events. This is going to be an amazing year in music and I'm so excited to share this expressive art with YOU.
