    El Programa de ESL

ESL (Language as a Second Language) or ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is a federal program offered to all students whose language in the home is other than English.  Turrentine Middle School has two qualified teachers whose primary objective is to support and ensure our students academic success.

In order to qualify for ESL services, parents must answer four simple questions  in a Home Language Survey.  If the language of the home is other than English then students must take and initial English test on the day they enroll in North Carolina Schools.  All students must take the WIDA ACCESS every Spring to assess Language Proficiency.  This test has four parts: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.  Students reach proficiency when they score this combination of scores (from as scale 1 to 6): a 4 in Reading; a 4 and Writing, and a Overall Composite of 4.8.  These means that the scores in Listening and Speaking have to be high to score 4.8 in the overall score.  Students struggling in their reading and writing might be place in ESL classes on the elective wheel every day.  Students whose scores are high enough, might be pull out on the elective wheel depending on need (consultations).  If the students complete this requirement, the students is exited from the program and monitor for two full years.  Monitor means that will keep checking on their academic progress.

If you have any questions please contact the ESL department at Turrentine Middle School or e-mail me or Mrs. Carolina Guarda at anytime.

    Thank you!
