    • Greetings! Welcome to 7th grade Social Studies with Mrs. Davis! I wish we could all meet in person, but for now we will be meeting virtually and making the most of school during a pandemic. This is not my main website for updates. Please navigate to my Google Site which I will link below in order to find the following helpful items!

First, is a page all about me, click the links in the top right corner to navigate the pages. Then, you will find a page with announcements, this will be where I post any important updates or changes. Next, is the page for your assignments, I am planning to update this page WEEKLY so you (and your parents) can see everything that will be due that week without having to log into Canvas (although this page does not replace Canvas). There is a Student Portal and a Parent Portal. Each of these is chock full of helpful links that you can use to help you navigate the web more easily. Lastly, you will see a couple video tutorials. One for how to use my Google Site and the other for how to navigate Canvas. The Canvas video is much longer, but be sure to watch it in its entirety as it may answer any future questions you have. That's all for now! I look forward to a fantastic school year with you all. Hopefully, it will be safe for us to learn in person very soon!

       Syllabus

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students, on this document you will find the information necessary to be successful this school year. Beginning the year at a distance will be new for all of us but I am confident that if we work together, we will handle it flawlessly! Please be sure to read everything contained within the document in order to better understand the procedures, policies, and protocols during this time. Once you have read through the document, please navigate to my website (listed below) and fill out the Google Form, titled “Syllabus Check-Off.”

      My Website

First, my website will be the hub for any and all updates. Having a website allows parents/guardians to see what is happening in class even though they may not have access to Canvas. Please be sure to check the website weekly.

Content: This year we focus on laying a strong foundation of social studies knowledge as well as studying the Modern World. We start with answering the question “What is social studies?” Afterwards we explore the Renaissance and the major wars, cultures and civilizations that follow. As we delve into this content, we will have opportunities to participate in discussions, simulations, research, and debates. These learning activities will give you important lifelong skills and help you to understand why the world is the way it is today.

Our study will break down approximately into the following schedule:

Quarter 1: Foundational Knowledge - What is social studies?, The Global Convergence

Quarter 2: Age of Revolutions, The Rise of World Powers

Quarter 3: World Conflicts, The Cold War

      Quarter 4: Modern Global Society

Class Expectations: Students are expected to participate in the daily class Zoom meetings, submit all classwork via the Canvas platform when it is due and maintain responsibility for their grade and coursework. Students are also expected to stay organized, while a binder is not required at this time, should we return to in-person instruction, it will be.

Zoom Expectations: Our class time will be largely done via the Zoom platform, meaning all our classes will take place virtually. However, this does not mean you should not actively participate. It is expected that during regularly scheduled class students will be on each Zoom call, with video turned on. Students should select a quiet place to participate and work for the duration of the class. When a student has a question, they may either message the teacher privately or, raise their hand to notify the teacher of their question. Microphones will remain muted unless students are working collaboratively or answering a question from the teacher.

Classwork: You are expected to complete all assignments to the best of your ability. While I do not grade everything we do in class, I will frequently collect an in-class assignment for grading purposes. I will not always announce which assignments will be collected for grading and which will not. Therefore, you should always do your best work.  All assignments should be submitted by the due date to avoid any point deductions.

Warm Up: You will be expected to complete a warm up each day at the beginning of each class. The warm up will be displayed during your class Zoom meeting. On your warm up document you will type the date followed by your numbered answers. All answers for that week must be on the same document, you will get a new document each week. Then, at the end of the week (usually Friday) you will submit your document.

Missing/Late work:  All assignments are strongly encouraged to be completed on time.  Late assignments will have a reduction of 10% off of their grade until Progress Report.  All late assignments turned in after the Progress Report will have a reduction of 50% off of their grade. Students will have 5 days after Progress Report to turn in missing assignments on that Progress Report only.  If missing assignments are not completed by the specified time period a score of zero will be entered in the gradebook and will remain. A zero will always be entered as a placeholder when assignments are not submitted so a student may see how the missing assignment impacts their overall grade.

Test Corrections:  It is important to me that you master the material I am teaching you. Therefore, I do allow graded tests (test only) to be looked back over, corrected, and resubmitted. Corrected tests can earn ½ credit back.  For example, a test score of 70% (70/100), if corrected, would become an 85% (85/100).

Quizzes: You will have quizzes at various points this school year, there will be at least three per quarter. Quizzes allow me to see your understanding prior to the test. Quizzes may NOT be corrected and therefore you should always study and do your best.

      Grade Breakdown:

      •         Assessments/Projects: 30%
      •         Classwork/Homework: 50%
      •         Quizzes: 20%

Communication: Most communication will be completed via My Website, please check the announcements tab weekly for up to date information. On occasion there may be information sent out via email to parents and students. For this reason, please fill out the “Contact Information” Google Form located on my website. Below is my contact information should you need to reach out to me.
