How Does Title I Money Benefit Your Child?

For the 2013-2014 school year, we have received $133,000 in federal government funds that are called “Title 1 Funds.” We use this money to strategically purchase instructional resources to support student learning. We can also use this money to fund teacher positions to reduce class sizes. This year, Sylvan lost two teacher positions due to state budget cuts. As a result, our School Improvement Team agreed that we would use our Title I money to fund two teachers, as shown below.

Right now, all of our 16 classrooms have an average of 20 students per class, with all classes having 23 children or less. If we had not funded these two extra classrooms, our average class size would have been 23 children, with some classes of over 25 children.

Below are expenses thus far. You can see that the funding of two teacher positions accounts for $96,000 or over 70% of our Title 1 funds. We believe this expense is a priority to keep class sizes small at Sylvan Elementary.
