    School Counselor
    I am Usha Verma, the School Counselor  at Elon Elementary. I have been serving Elon students since 2000. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Bachelor of Education, Masters of Arts (I) in Abnormal Psychology from Bombay University, India and M.S. in School Counseling from A&T University, Greensboro, NC .Prior to being a counselor I have experience teaching Pre-K-11 and my passion to help students succeed prompted me to pursue my School Counseling Career.
    Vision: The vision of Elon Counseling Program is to work collaboratively  with faculty, parents, and the community so that every student regardless of individual differences, can benefit from the developmental, comprehensive program.
    Mission: Elon's Counseling Program mission statement is to provide a data driven comprehensive developmental program that addresses the academic, career, social/emotional, psychological health of all students so that they can be prepared to engage in life-long learning.
    I work with a team of wonderful staff, parents and the community to assist all students with their social, emotional, academic and career goals Our Counseling program is based on ASCA (American School Counseling Association) National Model.
    School Counseling Program and services
    Counseling services are provided to the students through individual counseling, small group counseling, classroom guidance and consultative services. Classroom Guidance Curriculum is designed to help students acquire age-appropriate knowledge and skills within the following content areas:
    Self confidence development
    Motivation to achieve
    Decision Making
    Goal setting, planning and problem solving skills
    Interpersonal effectiveness
    Communication skills
    Cross-Cultural effectiveness
    Responsible behaviors
    Study skills and test taking strategies
    Career exploration
    Personal Safety
    Individual Counseling: Provide a supportive and confidential environment for students to work toward personal, social and academic growth. Students might be referred by a parent, teacher or themselves.
    Issues that school counselor might address with students:
    Peer Relations
    School Performance
    Family changes - Separation/Divorce
    Self Esteem issues
    Anger Management
    New Student
    Small Group: Groups that are offered to students may include Changing Families where parents are divorced, Social Skills, Self-esteem, Study Skills, Anger Management, Mediation/Conflict Resolution. Small groups provide a safe and supportive atmosphere for students to communicate feelings and differences in order to resolve conflict in a peaceful manner. Each year is a bit different and the needs of the current groups usually dictate what types of groups are offered. Confidentiality is an important part of small group.
    Transitional Support: Assist in orienting students as they move from daycare to elementary school as well as from elementary school to the middle school.
    Parent/Teacher Support: Consult with parents and teachers to develop appropriate academic and social supports needed for students' personal and academic success.
    Full implementation of the Counseling program is achieved through a partnership with the Student Support Services Team. This team comprises of counselor, Social Worker, Nurse  and administrators. This team meets weekly to ensure that our students have a successful learning experience at Elon.
