COST OF SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
The Alamance-Burlington School System will hold fees to a minimum. Students shall not be charged fees for required courses. Students shall not be assessed any fees or costs for the payment of salaries or stipends to school employees, coaches or volunteers. Students shall not be required, as a prerequisite for initial or continued participation in any school-sponsored activity, to pay for off-campus, privately-owned programs.
Prior to the beginning of each school year, each principal shall submit a list of all proposed fees to be collected from students or employees at his or her school. The superintendent or designee shall review the lists to ensure that none of the proposed fees is excessive and that adequate justification exists for any fee variations across schools. The superintendent or designee shall prepare a schedule of all proposed fees and submit it to the Board for its approval annually. In the discretion of the superintendent or designee, the schedule may include fee ranges for particular items or caps on the maximum amount that may be charged for particular items. No fees shall be collected from students or school personnel without the Board’s approval.
Any fees charged for school activities or non-required courses shall be waived or reduced for students who demonstrate economic hardship. The superintendent shall establish procedures for the review of requests for fee waivers or reductions. Principals shall assist those who wish to apply for fee waivers or reductions.
