                                                                      ABOUT MR. ROYAL

I would like to give an official welcome to my 8th grade social studies class. This is my first year at Broadview Middle School, and I'm excited to be a Bobcat! Just to give you a little background about myself, I come from Lynchburg, VA, born and raised. I received an Associates degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (K-6) from Liberty University. I am currently enrolled at Western Governor's University School of Education Graduate School, completing my Masters of Arts in Teaching Middle & Secondary Grades-Social Studies degree. I am proud to announce that I'll be graduating in 2017, and I'm looking forward to starting my educational specialist and doctoral degree program (Ed. S and Ed. D) in Educational Leadership in the next year as well. I am a strong advocate for public school education and education equality and justice. i have extensive in working with educational mentor and scholarship programs for middle and high school students, college focus programs, and educational/social-economic equality organizations.

    MY PHILOSOPHY

I am looking forward to carrying my students on an awesome adventure through 8th grade Social Studies, as it relates to North Carolina History and United States History.  Due to the various nationalities and ethnicities that are represented in my classes, I endeavor to make NC & US History come alive by relating the content to their cultural backgrounds, as a result, all of my students will develop an appreciation of of NC and US History, realizing that they do play apart in the makeup of this wonderful country.

I have high standards and expectations for all of my students. I am a firm believer that ALL students can learn, achieve, and succeed no matter who they are or where they come from. It is my vision to deliver a quality education through 8th grade social studies to my students.  Our comprehensive study of this course will provide inside insight and a strong framework for studying political, social, economic, geographic, and cultural issues that will prepare students for higher levels of learning and course work as it relates to Social Studies curriculum. Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate a higher awareness for current events by analyzing and examining historical perspectives, economics, global connections, technological influences on society, and different cultures.

    WHAT WILL YOUR CHILD EXPERIENCE
I have planned an exciting venture for my students as we progress through the year.   I will be bringing  in  some speakers from cultural backgrounds to tell of their real life experiences as it relates to various topics we will be covering, a virtual class pen pal experience with  another 8th grade US History Social Studies from another state so students can experience perspectives from outside their normal sphere, and we will take live virtual field trips to visit students their age from other countries such as Peru or Costa Rica, Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean for global connections. I will be integrating lots of technology and class projects into my classroom to expand learning opportunities.

Please take a look at my classroom procedures, rules and policies, my course outline, and my short term and long term goals that I expect my students to reach under the "class handouts" tab. I look forward into staying in contact with all of you through out the year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email or call the school number to reach me. I realize that many of the parents have various work schedules, so if you need my phone number to reach me, send a written request with your child or simply email me.
