Mr. Derrick Covington
8th Grade, English/Language Arts (ELA) Teacher
Welcome to an amazing and exciting school year at Broadview Middle School! I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the staff, students, and school community for the 2018-2019 school year. I serve on the Defenders Team with Ms. Bellerand and Mr. Gangitano. My classroom (Room 242) name is "The Hulk".
About Mr. Covington:
I was born in Burlington, North Carolina. I attended R. Homer Andrews Elementary, Broadview Middle School and graduated from Hugh M. Cummings High School. As a fifth grader, I had amazing teachers and a phenomenal principal in elementary school who greatly inspired me. It was then that I knew I wanted to be a teacher. After high school, I attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (AGGIE PRIDE!!) where I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies - Interdisciplinary, with a minor in Speech Communications. During my undergraduate years, I marched with the NCAT "Blue and Gold Marching Machine" Band as a tuba (sousaphone) player for two years. Majority of my teaching style and mastery is credited to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund - Teacher Quality and Retention Program (TMCF-TQRP). I have been a member of this program since 2014.
On a personal note, I love my family. I love to play my instrument, cook, travel, plan events, and listen to music. I can't leave school until I have cleaned my desk off each afternoon. Most of all, I love to spend time with my loved ones!
My favorite educational quote that is at the heart of why I am a teacher reads, "Every child deserves a champion; an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best they can possibly be." by Rita Pierson. This quote has been a guiding principle by which I have tried to live. I am proud to return to my former middle school and serve as a teacher and educator at Broadview Middle School!
