A little about myself and why do I teach....
After spending 27 years in the banking/finance industry I decided it was time to chase my heart and not my wallet. I want to make a difference in the lives of high school students and help them achieve their dreams and goals in whatever they choose to pursue. My teaching experience began at Northeast Guilford High School for 7 years and this will be my first full year as a Warrior of Western Alamance. I began here at Western in January 2020.
My philosophy on teaching stems from my belief that education can help an individual change the direction and path of their life at any time. As I tell my students that education can assist you in escaping any situation your life may bring. Education does not only change one’s life but it also instills a sense of accomplishment to overcome future endeavors and challenges that life may bring.
The balance of education comes in many forms and processes from various learning styles to actual application and experiences. To broaden one’s knowledge it is important that the individual has an understanding of the “why” and the “how” in regards to applying one’s learning experiences. Education without the “why” and “how” is my definition of learning but education with the “why” and “how” is knowledge. Work and effort has rewards and is a reflection of how bad someone truly wants to achieve a goal or dream. An education should be a part of everyone’s goals or dreams no matter your current stage of life. I completed my two graduate degrees in my late forties and early fifties and I recognize the lost opportunities that I had because both would have made me a better person, husband, parent, mentor, employee, manager, executive, teacher, and a stronger contributor to society.
My philosophy on education with students is to combine the various learning modalities to each learning goal and objective a course will bring. The lesson to achieve knowledge should allow for students to exercise each of their senses visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile when possible. Technology has made it possible for students to have visuals, auditory, and kinesthetic assignments that will appeal to their preferred style of learning. Technology is always changing which can make a student’s educational experience progressively better. As an educator, it is important to stay in touch with your industry or specialization area to remain up to date in opportunities, challenges, and improvements.
My mission in life is to help others become successful in whatever they choose to do and maximize the number of choices/options they will have now and in their future. Education allows that to happen.
