New Student Orientation Opportunity

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian of New Western Middle Students,

Western Middle School would like to extend a warm welcome to each of your families as we begin to plan for the 2019-2020 school year. We realize that entering a new school is a big transition for students especially in these critical adolescent years. The staff  here at Western Middle is looking forward to meeting each of you and helping to make this transition enjoyable and successful. In an effort to help ease the anxiety that is often felt by starting at a new school, we have created a summer transition program designed specifically for all students who are new to WMS. This summer program is open to any student in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade who will be attending Western for the first time this fall.

On Tuesday,  August 6th and Wednesday, August 7th we will be hosting the Journey to Becoming a Brave New Student Orientation Camp from 8:30am-11:45am. Because we are anticipating about 300 new students we are providing the same sessions on two separate dates. Students only need to attend on one day but do need to preregister at the link below in order to reserve a spot on their preferred date. There is a cap of 150 students on each of the dates. Please make sure to preregister by August 1st

Registration Link

Starting at 8:30 each morning we will begin student registration and provide a small continental breakfast for the students in the media center.  We recommend that students arrive by 8:45 so that they can have time to eat before our opening session which begins at 9:00. Students will begin breakout sessions at 9:15 and will be ready for dismissal at 11:45. Students will be reunited with their families in the car circle at the front of the school at 11:45.

An optional parent presentation will begin at 10:45 in the media center. This session will cover topics such as how to help your child “make the grade” in middle school, understanding the evolving adolescent attitudes/habits, helpful parent resources and a time for asking questions. Parents who do not wish to participate in this session are free to arrive back on campus at 11:45 to pick up their child in the car circle. If you are participating in the optional parent session please park your car so that traffic will be able to flow easily through the car circle if someone needed to leave before you. Parking spaces should be available in the lot just off of the car circle itself.

During their Journey students will have an opportunity to learn more about life here at Western Middle School by participating in three different breakout sessions. We will be conducting sessions on PBIS behavior and school safety, organization and responsibility and the ins and outs of PE and Encore classes. Several teachers will be on hand to go over typical teacher and course expectations, supply needs, and answer any questions that you and your child have about the upcoming school year.

Please don’t delay in pre-registering for this event because spaces are limited each day to 150 students.  We hope that you and your child can be a part of our WMS Journey to Becoming a Brave. If you have any questions about this event please call or email one of our school counselors [Emmy Jacobs (336.438.4000 ext 40310  emily_jacobs@abss.k12.nc.us ) or Beverly Vernon (336.438.4000 ext 40311  beverly_vernon@abss.k12.nc.us)].  * Please note the counselors do not have work hours during the summer but will be checking phone messages & email periodically *

We hope that you and your child are as excited as we are about the 2018-2019 school year and look forward to see you in August!

Sincerely,

Greg Holland, WMS Principal Emmy Jacobs, WMS School Counselor    Beverly Vernon, WMS School Counselor
