Board appoints new principals
Three assistant school heads also named

The Alamance-Burlington School System announced two new principals after a closed school board session Monday night.

The board approved Superintendent Lillie Cox’s recommendations to make Andrew Brehler principal at Woodlawn Middle School and Julie Bethea principal at Hillcrest Elementary School.

The board also accepted the resignation of Nan Wooten, principal at Highland Elementary School, effective Sept. 30. A personnel report distributed after the closed sessions said Wooten is retiring.

Brehler has been principal at Northern Middle School in Person County since 2010. He was an assistant principal at Woodlawn from 2006 to 2010 after teaching science and coaching there for a year. He taught middle school in the Durham Public Schools, taught high school and coached in the Chatham County Schools and taught at a youth development center operated by the N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

He has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Appalachian State University, certification in middle school education from N.C. Central University, and a master’s degree in school administration, and specialist’s degree in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership there.

Brehler begins July 1. His annual salary is $66,564.

Bethea has worked in the Alamance-Burlington School System since 1996. She has been principal at E.M. Yoder Elementary School since 2009. She was assistant principal at Smith Elementary School from 2006 to 2009. She taught fifth grade and was literacy facilitator at Andrews Elementary School.

She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Elon University and a master’s degree in school administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Bethea begins July 1. Her annual salary is $67,568.

The board also approved the hiring of three assistant principals. Each has been a principal intern as part of a program designed to train teachers interested in becoming administrators:

Melvin Diggs will be assistant principal at Ray Street Academy. He did his principal internship at Graham Middle School and Graham High School, and previously worked in the Alamance-Burlington system as program specialist and district reading consultant in exceptional children’s special services. He begins July 1. His annual salary is $54,960.

Shadonna Gunn will be assistant principal at Eastlawn Elementary. She did her principal internship at Haw River Elementary School and has been math coach and teacher at Eastlawn. She begins July 1. Her annual salary is $48,455.

Hollis Wroblewski will be assistant principal at Haw River Elementary. She did her principal internship at Grove Park Elementary School. She was curriculum facilitator at Haw River Elementary and taught at E.M. Holt Elementary School. She begins July 1. Her annual salary is $49,808.
