A graph and chart in the main lobby at Audrey Garrett Elementary School show a total of 2,800 cans collected from all the classrooms for the school-wide food drive. Fourth-grade teachers Laurie Frazier and Heather Tapp have organized the drive that began on Nov. 12 and finished last Friday, Nov. 22.
One teacher Sabra Harrelson (not pictured) had 300 cans donated from her classroom. Each class was given a goal of 100 cans.
The kids realized the need even within our own school, said social worker Ambraya Timmons.
Garrett chose two organizations to be the recipients of their food drive: The Salvation Army and Allied Churches.
“We identified The Salvation Army and Allied Churches as in need with a very low supply, and they also expressed an interest in our giving,” said Timmons.
“We know a lot of families are going through hard, economic times, and we wanted to give to them.”
