THE PIEDMONT TRIAD Education Consortium recognized Highland Elementary and Eastern Alamance High School as signature schools.

The consortium is a collaboration of 15 school districts and 17 community colleges, colleges and universities in central North Carolina, including Alamance Community College and Elon University.

Signature schools show improvement over 12 months in variety of areas.

The consortium recognized Highland Elementary School for its flexible scheduling promoting collaborative teaching, and teachers working with technology to let students apply skills. Some examples the consortium gave included a podcast promoting healthy eating paired with a spreadsheet with calorie counts and healthy foods, grocery lists and budgeting; and a blog tracking mushers in the Iditarod dog-sled race.

Eastern Alamance High School, according to the consortium, in the past three years has better prepared students for life after high school. Eastern’s four-year graduation rate increased to almost 84 percent. Eastern has more students taking honors and advanced-placement classes and tests and had the highest percentage of seniors taking the SAT college entrance exam in the school’s history.
