Two Teachers receive Excellent Educator Awards for February 2014
THE ALAMANCE-BURLINGTON BOARD of Education has recognized Philip Hochreiter, of North Graham Elementary School, and Kevin Scharen, of Graham High School, with excellent educator awards.
Hochreiter said he has been teaching here for eight years and now teaches third grade. He focuses on keeping students socially engaged and enthusiastic about school rather than on test scores. He said he loves the work in spite of the difficult year this has been for third-graders and their teachers with additional testing related to the Read to Achieve legislation.
“I’ve never been through anything like this in my life,” Hochreiter said. “I’m really proud to be a teacher.”
Scharen has been teaching for nine years in North Carolina and teaches math at GHS. Scharen said he uses student data to get to know his students better, asking them what helped them perform better one year and worse another to find out the best way to teach them.
“At the end of the day, I care more about the students than I do the actual material,” Scharen said.
