A cappella group bound for Ohio The Times-News 2/28/14 Reprinted with permission.
Western Alamance High School’s mixed-ensemble singing group WA Cappella heads to Ohio this morning for the Ohio Valley semi-finals of the International Championship of High School A Cappella.
“If you’ve seen (the movie) ‘Pitch Perfect,’ it’s the high school version of that competition,” said Sean Lucier, teacher adviser for the group. “And if we come in first, we get to go to New York City in April.”
Seven other a cappella groups are in the semi-finals, and the top scoring group after the 12-minute performances Saturday moves to the finals.
WA Cappella rehearses Mondays and Fridays, but has put in three- to six-hour rehearsals the past two Saturdays to prepare for this competition. Group members also have done their own choreography.
In mid-April, WA Cappella plans to record a small CD to help raise money for the group and the choral department at Western.
