About 16 Grove Park Elementary School fifth-graders will be joining the Uncle Eli’s Quilting Party this year, according to a news release from the Alamance-Burlington School System.

During February, Black History Month, the students learned about secrets hidden in quilt designs to disguise directions and instructions on how slaves could get to safe houses and eventually to freedom via the Underground Railroad. At the end of the month, the school held a celebration to share what each grade level had learned.

Now, thanks to the efforts of Principal Shadonna Gunn and Wendy McBane of Uncle Eli’s, the students will get to showcase their knowledge in the Eli Whitney gym during the Uncle Eli’s party.
