Alamance-Burlington Child Nutrition Director Earns State Award
Kathy Oakley, Executive Director for Child Nutrition Services for Alamance-Burlington Schools, was awarded the prestigious Mary Long Beasley Distinguished Service Award by the School Nutrition Association of North Carolina at the organization’s annual conference in June. The annual award is given to one director of a public school nutrition program in North Carolina with a documented career of outstanding dedication, service and contributions to the profession, and who exhibits a passion for serving the needs of children first.
Oakley’s career spans more than 38 years with the Burlington City Schools system and with Alamance-Burlington Schools as an assistant cafeteria manager, manager, supervisor and director of the district-wide program. She is a graduate of Alamance Community College with an associate degree in Food Service.
Nomination letters in support of Oakley highlighted her compassion for hungry children, her passion for excellence in operations and her ability to bring out the best in every employee at all levels of the division. Oakley’s ability to maintain a financially sound program in the midst of dramatic changes in federal directives and ever-rising food costs was also noted as one of the strengths she brings to Alamance-Burlington Schools. Currently she oversees food service operations at 36 school locations serving more than 3.5 million meals annually, and more than 30 federal summer feeding program sites.
