Students in the Alamance Youth Leadership Academy, known as AYLA, at Turrentine Middle School, have been busy helping the school and community. Tiffany Jones, one of the advisers for the program, said students have worked throughout the school year to raise money to benefit the school’s library, and have also asked for contributions from businesses.
So far, students have donated $2,000 to the library and an additional $500 to help with other needs at the school. They are participating in a national campaign to raise money for cancer research. Students sold Turrentine wristbands, organized a talent show and sold carnations for Valentine’s Day. They held a “Book or a Buck” drive to benefit both the school’s library and May Memorial Library in downtown Burlington.
