Western Middle gets new leader

   Greg Holland, the principal at North Graham Elementary School, has been hired as principal of Western Middle School.

   After a closed session that was part of an Alamance-Burlington Board of Education meeting Monday night, school board members unanimously approved Superintendent Lillie Cox’s recommendation for Holland to lead Western Middle.

   He has taught, coached and worked as an administrator in local schools since 1992.

   He will begin his new duties Nov. 1. His annual salary is $70,914.

   Holland has been principal at North Graham since 2006, previously serving as an assistant principal at Elon Elementary School and Graham Middle School.

   He taught physical education and coached at Eastern Alamance High School; taught physical education and coached at Southern Alamance High School; and taught physical education, served as athletic director and coached at Graham Middle School.

   Holland served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1983 to 1987. He graduated from Elon College, now Elon University, in 1991 with a degree in physical education and earned a master’s degree in school administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2002.

   Former principal and central office administrator Wayne Beam has been interim principal at Western Middle since Wendy Gooch left the job to take a technology-related job in the central office.

   Gooch was hired in June to be the school’s principal after Lizzie Alston’s retirement.
