Four students in Health Occupations Students of America at Western Alamance High School earned state honors and the opportunity to compete in a national competition in Orlando, Fla., in June.

More than 3,000 students competed in the North Carolina HOSA Leadership Conference in Greensboro.

The Western HOSA team is coached by adviser Donna Deaton, and includes the following winners of career development events: Kanan Shah (first place, medical math); Kaitlin Gillespie (second place, extemporaneous writing) and Taylor Chrismon and Hannah Grogan (second place, community emergency response team).

Shah earned a perfect score in the 1.5 hour medical math competition that included computations of drug dosages and IV flow rates with conversions of temperature and measurement ratios and proportions of solutions.

Gillespie’s extemporaneous writing topic was “How does HOSA contribute to a health care community?”

Chrismon and Grogan received Community Emergency Response Team certification in February and participated in written and skills tests including a mock disaster, such as a tornado or large fire.
