EASTERN ALAMANCE High School students Mackenzie Ballard and Kiccarol McLean were first-place winners in the North Carolina “Hop on the Bus” Business Plan Competition. They were recognized at last week’s Alamance-Burlington Board of Education meeting.

Both entered the statewide high school business plan competition that is sponsored by the N.C. Council for Economic Education and the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. Each competitor is required to create a new business and complete a detailed business plan including cash flow projections for the first year of the business.

McLean, a senior at Eastern, was awarded first place for the fall 2011 competition for her business plan to create a nail and hair salon called “The Light.”

Ballard, a sophomore at Eastern, was awarded first place for the spring 2012 competition for her business plan for a sports photography business called “Mackenzie Images.”

The business plans are judged by small-business experts from across the state. Selected semifinalists create a video presentation based on their written business plan and submit it for judging.
