Stephan named Outstanding Secondary Math Teacher

   HEATHER STEPHAN, who teaches seventh-grade math at Southern Middle School, is the 2012 Alamance-Burlington Outstanding Secondary Math Teacher of the Year.

   Heather Ward, principal at Southern Middle, describes Stephan as “courageous and fearless” in using technology and new ideas in class. She also teaches her colleagues as a teacher leader on the math core team.

   In recognition of her achievement, Stephan will receive a yearlong membership to the North Carolina Council for Teachers of Mathematics, a personalized award, and recognition at the state math conference in October.

   Stephan earned a bachelor’s degree in math education from Providence College in Rhode Island, a master’s degree in education with a focus on curriculum from Western Connecticut State University, and a Certificate of Advanced Studies/Educational Foundations from Southern Connecticut State University. She holds National Board Certification in Middle Grades Math.
