A senior at the Alamance-Burlington Middle College was recognized at last week’s Alamance--Burlington Board of Education meeting as the first student in the loocal system to enter competition in the North Carolina History Day contest.

Briggette Slivinski earned firstplace honors in the Central Piedmont Region event for her project, which was t titled “Revolutionizing Gender: Women in the Military.” Her work was chosen for the top prize froom among student entries from 20 counties.

Her project went on to win fourth place in statewide competition at the Museum of History in Raleigh.

Beginning in September 2011, Slivinksi conducted extensive primary historical research for the independent research project, analyzed and interpreted her research, and based her exhibit on women’s struggles in the military during World War II. For the competition, which was not part of a class project, she submitted an annotated bibliography, a process paper, a visual “in the round” exhibit, and participated in an interview by a team of judges made up of professional historians and educators.
