GRAHAM — Kevin Scharen figured out the assembly Friday afternoon was about him when his wife and daughter walked into the auditorium at Alamance Community College holding bunches of balloons.

The Alamance-Burlington School System teacher of the year is now also the regional teacher of the year, and will be in the running for state teacher of the year.

Scharen’s daughter Keira ran to him as he walked to the front of the room and stood with him through the announcement, and he told the students she was the inspiration that kept him in teaching.

“If I’m not the teacher I would want for her, then I should leave the profession,” Scharen said.

Scharen teaches high school math at the Alamance-Burlington Early College at ACC. Superintendent Bill Harrison also was there for the announcement, as was Keana Triplett, the current state teacher of the year, and DeAnna Foust-Platt, regional coordinator and former ABSS teacher of the year.

Harrison said he had observed Scharen teach many times and saw how much he cared about his students, got them interested in the subject, and clearly and effectively got his lessons across.

“Mr. Scharen represents a whole lot of great teachers, and represents them very well,” Harrison said to the students.

“I just can’t tell you how proud we are of you,” he said to Scharen.

Scharen is from Bethpage, N.Y. He and his wife Christina moved to Graham in 2005 when he started his career at Eastern Guilford High School. She teaches at Sylvan Elementary School.

Scharen is now teacher of the year for Region 5, which encompasses 15 school districts from Orange to Forsyth and from Caswell to Chatham counties.

The state will choose the next teacher of the year in April.
