More Alamance County students have been honored in the annual Scholastic Art and Writing competition.

Rachel Witzel, a senior from Western Alamance High School, won a National Gold Key award for her painting, “Student.”

Witzel also won three North Carolina Gold Key awards and an Honorable Mention in Drawing/ Illustration, and a Silver Key award in Mixed Media.

Also, Southern Alamance High School senior Lauren Cates won a National Silver Key award for her lithograph, “Madie,” in the Printmaking category.

In the North Carolina competition, Cates won three Gold Key awards and an Honorable Mention in Photography, a Gold Key in Mixed Media, a Silver Key Art Portfolio award, and a Silver Key award in Painting and Printmaking.

Students in grades 7–12 across the nation submitted more than 320,000 entries this year. Witzel’s piece was among the top 1 percent of all entries.

The national award winning pieces will be on display in New York for two years. An awards ceremony for national winners will be held at Carnegie Hall in June.
