Walter M. Williams High’s Stephanie Hunt Named Principal of the Year
Congratulations to Stephanie Hunt, Walter M. Williams High School! Mrs. Hunt is the 2019 Alamance-Burlington Principal of the Year.
A veteran educator with more than thirty years of experience was announced as the Alamance-Burlington 2019 Principal of the Year on Friday, October 27. Stephanie Hunt, principal at Walter M. Williams High and former assistant principal for the Bulldogs, was surprised with the news by a visit from Superintendent Bruce Benson and Director of Teacher Recruitment and Retention Dean Richardson. Claps and cheers could be heard echoing through the halls when a school wide announcement was made in her honor.
Hunt earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in K-12 Health and Physical Education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a Masters of School Administration from Western Carolina University. During her career, Hunt taught in Florida and served as a teacher, curriculum facilitator and assistant principal in Guilford County Schools before coming to Alamance-Burlington Schools as an assistant principal at Williams High in 2013. She was named principal in 2016.
Noted on the nomination forms submitted by colleagues, Mrs. Hunt has been instrumental in development of the first International Baccalaureate Programme at Williams High, one of thirty-three programs in North Carolina.
In addition, staff members lauded her ability to develop close relationships with students and staff members as a signature success at Williams, including this passage from the nomination form:
“I have never seen a principal that has more direct interaction with her students than Mrs. Hunt. She invests her time and gives her effort to finding workable solutions to issues that some students face. They know that they have an advocate in her and are very comfortable sharing concerns they have with her. She listens with an impartial ear and always offers constructive feedback that, sometimes, they don't want to hear but know, because it comes from her, it is in their best interest. She truly believes that each student is extraordinary and makes them feel that way.”
Mrs. Hunt will advance to the next stage in competition for Piedmont Triad Region 5 Principal of the Year in the 2019 North Carolina Wells Fargo Principal of the Year program. Since 1984, Wells Fargo Bank has partnered with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to honor outstanding education leaders across the state.
