Alamance-Burlington Schools is celebrating School Psychology Awareness Week, which spans Nov. 12–16. Seventeen psychologists serve the 36 ABSS schools, led by Lead Psychologist Mike Thomas. These employees have a number of responsibilities: counseling, conflict mediation, meeting with parents, training teachers, working with outside pediatricians, therapists and social workers, and helping students develop social skills. School psychologists are often lumped in with guidance counselors, though they’re different. Guidance counselors focus more on academics and vocational goals, ensuring that students are on the right path to college, employment or enlisting in the military.
