Seventh-grader is $20,000 richer By Jessica Williams, The Times-News 2/27/19 Reprinted with permission.
Broadview Middle School seventh-grader Gabriel Castillo Calderon is one of only 10 North Carolina students awarded a College Foundation of North Carolina Victor E. Bell Jr. Scholarship for 2019. It was established to “encourage and assist high potential North Carolina students with limited financial resources to pursue higher education,” and is named for Raleigh banker Victor E. Bell Jr., former chair of the Board of Trustees for the College Foundation. The scholarship funds, which are kept in a 529 account, build each year the student meets the academic criteria with a maximum contribution of $20,000. Calderon was honored for the achievement Monday, Feb. 25, at the Alamance-Burlington Board of Education meeting.
