Dangerous Social Media Inspired Prank

Parents,

We are asking for your help and urgent support to stop a very dangerous trend currently spreading on social media platforms, such as TikTok.  Some students, including our own ABSS students, have been attempting a challenge that involves intentionally damaging school-issued Chromebooks to make them smoke.

This is extremely dangerous and can result in:

  • ·         Devices emitting smoke or catching fire

  • ·         Damage to electrical outlets and chargers

  • ·         Risk of electric shock

  •         Serious injury

  • ·         Disciplinary action and legal consequences under North Carolina law

Students are inserting items such as: pencil lead, pushpins, gum wrappers, or paperclips into the USB ports to short-circuit devices.

Please help us by:

  • Talking with your students about the dangers of these online trends

  • Explaining the serious consequences of damaging school property

  • Monitoring how, when, and where their Chromebook is used in our virtual setting

As stated above, there can be disciplinary action and legal consequences but students/parents will also be responsible to pay the repair/replacement costs for devices.  This cost could be up to $250 maximum to replace a Chromebook.

Furthermore, AVS students will be dismissed and returned to their zonal school for this type of behavior.  If you have any questions, please contact our office at 336-570-6134.
