Today, our students had the unique opportunity to travel to the NC Legislative building to show support of House Bill 430, also known as "Solly's Law." "Solly's Law,"
if passed, will raise the age of possession of tobacco/nicotine products in NC to 21 years old to match federal law and is named in honor of Solomon Wynn, a young man who tragically passed due to complications of vaping. The bill would also provide more prosecution of vape shops that sell these harmful products to minors.
Senior Macey Morris represented Eastern well and gave a compelling speech imploring elected officials to pass the bill to help keep vaping products out of the hands of youth. She spoke of how bad vaping is inside and outside of school amongst her peers, who have easy access to these vapes and how detrimental they are to the school learning environment as a whole. Myself and Coach Mitchener served as chaperones for the press conference and were able to accompany the students on a tour with Representative Donnie Loftis (Gaston) of the House chambers. We also met with Representative Stephen Ross (Alamance) and Dennis Riddell (Alamance), with Senator Amy Galey (Alamance) also showing support by attending the press conference.
