ABSS Advanced Learners

AIG Plan & Program

In response to state legislation, Article 9-B, ABSS completed the latest three year AIG Plan in the spring of 2022. The plan, under guidelines set by the State Board of Education, is designed to identify and establish criteria for providing educational services at all levels, K-12.

The ABSS AIG Plan was developed by AIG teachers, parents of AIG students, school counselors, ABSS Curriculum and Program Specialists, and district leaders. The ABSS Board of Education approved this plan in June 2022, and it was submitted to the Department of Public Instruction in July 2022.

AIG specialists give an overview of the AIG plan and answer questions pertaining to gifted education to the staff at their school(s) annually, as well as hold annual parent meetings to give an overview of the AIG plan, to review differentiated service options, and to answer questions. Parents are encouraged to contact the AIG teacher at their child's school for information regarding the AIG program and services at any time.

Resources

Licensure

To become an AIG Teacher in ABSS, one must have either the AIG Licensure Add-on or a Master's Degree in Gifted Education. There are many programs throughout the state that offer AIG Licensure. For more information, please visit NC DPI's website

ABSS also offers a year-long professional development for regular education teachers who teach AIG students in the regular classroom setting. This opportunity allows teachers to gain an understanding of gifted students in terms of identification, social and emotional needs, differentiation, and instructional practices in a blended setting, using both Canvas for online assignments and discussions as well as face-to-face meetings for collaboration.
