ABSS will operate on a two-hour delay tomorrow, Friday, February 6. Temperatures are expected to be below 30-degrees and there are many wet roads that can freeze. The delay will allow for more daylight as everyone begins traveling in the morning. Staff and families are urged to use caution and give themselves extra time to get to school and work in the morning. As a reminder, these decisions are made with the safety of our staff and students in mind. We hope to be on a normal schedule next week!

Remote Learning Day with an image of Superintendent Dr. Fleming in a fictional snow setting
Thank you to all our students, teachers, and parents for working together this week during remote learning. Tomorrow, Friday, January 30, will be an Optional Workday. That means there will be no remote learning for students tomorrow. We’re doing this so we can save our very last remote learning day for any future weather events. There will be no athletic or after-school activities tomorrow. Friday, February 13th will now be a regular school day for students instead of a teacher workday. We appreciate you being so flexible and for making this week a success. Enjoy the long weekend, and we hope to see everyone back soon! Thank you, and stay safe.

Due to continued hazardous road conditions, we will transition to a Remote Learning Day on Tuesday, January 27. This means all schools and facilities will be closed for students and staff. Students should work on their remote learning assignments. No athletics or afterschool activities. Remote Learning Days are flexible school days where students work at their own pace on posted assignments, also known as asynchronous work. While there are no required live classes, teachers are available during optional office hours if students have questions. Students are expected to complete all activities and reach out to their teachers if they need assistance. Work is due within five days of returning to school. View/Download our Remote Learning Guide here: https://5il.co/3tij1

Remote medical care is now available at R. Homer Andrews Elementary School through a partnership with Cone Health! Today, members of the community including Cone Health representatives, School Board, County Commissioner Kelly Allen, Burlington Pediatrics, and Impact Alamance, joined Principal Benson and Dr. Fleming for the official unveiling of the telehealth program at Andrews! 🏥 🧑‍⚕️

Cone Health’s school-based telehealth program partners with ABSS to reduce chronic absenteeism and increase student wellness by providing convenient, on-site healthcare. The program places a trained staff member in the school who facilitates a virtual medical appointment between the student, their parent/guardian (joining remotely), and a healthcare provider (physician or nurse practitioner). Using specialized equipment like electronic stethoscopes and high-definition cameras, the provider can diagnose and treat minor illnesses such as strep throat, flu, and earaches, administer immediate care, and send prescriptions to a local pharmacy. Crucially, the visits are covered by most insurance, and are provided at no cost to uninsured families, allowing students to receive care quickly and return to class the same day, preventing missed instructional time.

We're thankful for our partnership with Cone and the benefits this program will provide for our students and families! ❤️

As we continue into the school year, we're excited to look back at the amazing progress during the first nine weeks! Our Progress Report Video highlights three key areas:

📵 Cell phone-free classrooms leading to greater student connection and engagement.

🤝 Strong relationships that are building confident learners.

💡 Data-driven, standards-aligned instruction challenging and supporting every student.

We're proud of this progress and encourage you to keep the conversation going at home! Ask your student about what they're learning class and connections at school. Thank you for being a vital part of the #ABSSCommunity!

We're proud to share that Anna Sophia Steinki from R. Homer Andrews Elementary School is the 2025 ABSS Beginning Teacher of the Year! 🌟 You'd think she had many more years of experience with how she handles herself in her classroom. 📷 Today's snapshot: In the span of just a few minutes, she teaches her class how to solve a division equation, switching between English and Spanish, engaging the whole class in numerous ways, and circling around to all students to boost their confidence and check their progress. Then she stopped to do two interviews! 🤩 You can see the students respect her greatly and were eager to celebrate her today! As she'll tell you, her own confidence has grown over time thanks to the support of her BT leaders and mentors. We can't wait to show more in an upcoming video and article. For now, join us in saying CONGRATULATIONS to Ms. Steinki!

Ms. Steinki poses with two smiling students who have their arms around her. All three are looking at the camera with warm smiles in the classroom setting with other students visible working in the background.
Ms. Steinki kneels beside a young student who is making a peace sign with her hand. Both are smiling at the camera. The student wears a red and black plaid jacket, and the classroom activity continues behind them.
Ms. Steinki leans over a student's desk, providing one-on-one instruction as the student works on a math worksheet. The teacher is pointing to the student's work while other classmates work independently at their desks in the background. A smartboard displaying a math lesson is visible on the wall.
Image 1: Teacher Anna Sophia Steinki stands at the front of her classroom surrounded by enthusiastic elementary students striking celebratory poses. The students are arranged in two rows on a colorful circular carpet, with some kneeling and others standing, all making excited gestures with their hands raised. A whiteboard behind them shows a division equation (2,800 ÷ 4 = 700) and the date October 1, 2025.

Parents,
Due to the weather forecast, we are going to postpone our School Clean Up to Saturday, October 4th. Hope to see you there!
