Math Courses

Introductory Mathematics- Study topics include special topics in algebra. Concepts include mathematical reasoning, properties of exponents, linear functions, quadratics functions and exponential functions.

   Grade: 9-10
   Weight: S
   Prerequisite: None

Alternate Math I- Alternate Mathematics I provides learners an opportunity to apply mathematical concepts from Math I and Math II in practical situations while focusing on learning skills associated with information and communication technology.

   Grade: 9-10
   Weight: S
   Prerequisite: None

Foundations of Math I- Foundations of Math I is designed to assist students in mastering the algebraic skills necessary for success in Math I. Students will learn to (1) operate with the real numbers to solve problems; (2) find, identify, and interpret the slopes and intercepts of a linear relation; (3) visually determine a line of best fit for a given scatter plot, explain the meaning of the line, and make predictions using the line; (4) collect, organize, analyze, and display data to solve problems; (5) apply the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems. Curriculum for this course is VMath and prerequisite Math I priority standards. This course provides one unit of elective credit, but does not count as one of the four math credits required to graduate meeting the future-ready core requirements.

   Grade: 9-10
   Weight: S
   Prerequisite: None

Math I-  Study algebraic concepts that include operations with real numbers and polynomials, relations and functions, creation and application of linear functions and relations, and an introduction to nonlinear functions

   Grade: 9-12
   Weight: S
   Prerequisite: None

Alternate Math II- Alternate Mathematics II provides learners an opportunity to apply mathematical concepts from Math I and Math II in financial situations while focusing on learning skills associated with information and communication technology.

   Grade: 9-12
   Weight: S
   Prerequisite: Alternate Math I

Foundations of Math II- Study topics included in the first half of Geometry with an emphasis on geometric figures, conditional statements, parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent triangles, relationships within triangles, quadrilaterals, and area.

   Grade: 10-12
   Weight: S
   Prerequisite: Math I

Math II-  Study geometric concepts building upon middle school topics. Students will move from an inductive approach to deductive methods of proof in studying geometric figures. Two- and three-dimensional reasoning skills will be emphasized and students will broaden their use of the coordinate plane to include transformations of geometric  figures.

   Grade: 9-12
   Weight: S
   Prerequisite: Math I

Math II Honors- Cover the Geometry curriculum and extend concepts to include higher levels of critical thinking, problem analysis, and enrichment activities.

   Grade: 9-11
   Weight: H
Prerequisite: 8th grade Algebra I or teacher recommendation

Foundations of Math III- Study topics included in the first half of Algebra II with an emphasis on equations and inequalities, linear relations and functions, data analysis, systems of equations and inequalities, matrices, polynomials, radical equations and functions, complex numbers, quadratic equations and functions, and polynomial equations and functions.

   Grade: 10-12
   Weight: S
   Prerequisite: Math II

Math III- Study advanced algebraic concepts including functions, polynomials, rational expressions, complex numbers, systems of equations, inequalities and matrices. Emphasis will be placed on practical applications and modeling.

   Grade: 10-12
   Weight: S
   Prerequisite: Math II

Math III Honors- This course continues the development of algebraic structures begun in Algebra I with the study of functions, irrational and complex numbers, quadratic functions, systems of equation, conic sections and exponential and logarithmic functions. These topics are the same as regular Algebra II, but will be covered in grater depth.

   Grade: 10-12
   Weight: H
Prerequisite: Math II or Math II Honors

Advanced Functions and Modeling- Make your fourth year of mathematics a study of the concepts of statistics and functions. This will fulfill the course requirement necessary for admission to a UNC school while enabling you to broaden your knowledge of mathematics to include applied statistics and functions. This course should not replace Pre-Calculus Honors.

   Grade: 11-12
    Weight: S
Prerequisite: Math III or Honors Math III

Essentials of College Math- This course emphasizes understanding of math concepts rather than just memorizing procedures. Students learn the context behind the procedure: why to use a certain formula or method to solve a problem, for example. This equips them with higher-order thinking to apply math skills, functions and concepts in different situations. The course prepares students for college-level math assignments based on the content. This course is not designed to prepare students for college-level math in STEM majors; however, it is appropriate for students who desire to attend a four-year university and major in humanities. This course is recognized by the UNC systems as a 4th level course.

   Grade: 11-12
   Weight: S
Prerequisite: Math III or Honors Math III

Discrete Math-  Discrete Mathematics introduces students to the mathematics of networks, social choice, and decision making. Students will use matrices and recursively-defined relationships to solve problems, as well as working with simulations for probability models. Applications and modeling are central to this course of study. Appropriate technology, from manipulatives to calculators and application software, should be used regularly in the classroom. The final exam for this course is the NC Final Exam for Discrete Mathematics.

   Grade: 11-12
   Weight: S
Prerequisite: Math III or Honors Math III

Discrete Math Honors- Study the mathematics of networks, social choice, and decision making. Also, study the application of matrix arithmetic and probability. Applications and modeling will be central to this course.

   Grade: 11-12
   Weight: H
Prerequisite: Math III or Honors Math III

Pre-Calculus Honors- Study trigonometry, as well as advanced algebra topics, analytic geometry, sequences and series, and data analysis. Included also is an introduction to limits and elementary derivatives.

   Grade: 11-12
   Weight: H
   Prerequisite:Math III Honors

Calculus- Begin with a study of the concepts of calculus, including functions, limits, and derivatives. Strengthen skills and concepts from Pre-Calculus Honors with an emphasis on geometric, numerical, and analytical approaches.

   Grade: 11-12
   Weight: H
