Alamance-Burlington Schools is taking a proactive approach to assist students in transitioning to new schools by offering several programs this summer. One such program is the Middle School Summer Bridge, which will take place from August 7-10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All rising 6th graders are invited to attend their assigned middle school. The goal is to set students on a course for success.

“This will give students an opportunity to interact with teachers, participate in team building activities with new classmates, along with project-based learning opportunities, and explore strategies to handle the academic and social challenges of middle school,” said Revonda Johson, Chief Academic Officer.

The deadline to register is June 23, 2023.

Johnson and the Executive Directors for Elementary and Middle Schools gave the Board of Education an overview of the various programs during the Tuesday afternoon session.

A similar program is being planned for rising 9th graders, August 7-10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The high school Summer Bridge Program is designed to help 8th-grade students successfully transition from middle to high school. Data shows that students who have a successful freshman year are much more likely to graduate from high school on time and be prepared for their future.

Summer Bridge students will participate in a variety of activities to prepare them for their freshman year including campus tours, learning about opportunities in ABSS and post-secondary opportunities as well as strategies to succeed in high school.

ABSS will also host Summer School for high school students needing credit recovery. That is scheduled for August 1-11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

An elementary summer school is also planned. Students who need additional support will be invited to attend July 25 through August 10, 2023, at 17 sites across the District.

Breakfast, lunch, and transportation will be provided for all of these programs.

ABSS is also looking to increase participation in sports next year.  The Board of Education heard a post-pandemic perspective on athletics during Tuesday afternoon’s meeting.  With the recent rezoning, coaches and athletic directors are reaching out to potential athletes, making them aware of training opportunities, and continuing to look for additional ways to welcome student-athletes and encourage participation.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on school sports with modified training schedules and canceled games. Many students resorted to pursuing other opportunities outside of school and haven’t returned to play.  An average of 700 students participated in middle school sports this past year.  ABSS High schools averaged over 800.

In another action, the Board approved the request of $265,000 from lottery funds before taking the same request to the Alamance County Board of Commissioners.  The money will supplement existing funds to complete the Eastern Alamance High School Press Box.

In administrative matters, the Board discussed appointing a person to serve on the Alamance Community College Board of Trustees.  The Board will begin accepting letters of interest through June 16 and discuss appointing someone to fill the seat at its June 26 meeting.  A public notice will be posted soon on the ABSS website.
