Big goals start with small sparks of inspiration! High Schoolers from the Career & Technical Education Center visited Haw River Elementary to give students a hands-on look at the skills they are learning in culinary arts, nursing, computer engineering, animation, automotive, and carpentry! #ABSSCTE #ThisisABSS

A group portrait of seven high school students from the Career & Technical Education Center standing outdoors at Haw River Elementary. The students represent various career paths, including two in culinary uniforms (red chef coats and white aprons/toques), one in a nursing fundamentals shirt, and others in casual attire representing automotive, carpentry, and animation programs.
A group of elementary school children sit on a wooden floor, happily tasting samples provided by the culinary arts program. A girl in the center wearing a pink Grinch shirt enjoys a small spoonful of food.
An elementary school girl carefully installs a stick of RAM into a computer motherboard on a table. Other students and high school mentors watch her progress during a technology and animation career workshop.
A young boy at Haw River Elementary smiles as he uses a yellow measuring tape to check the height of a classmate during a health and nursing career demonstration in the school gymnasium.
A high school nursing student smiles as she helps an elementary school girl use a stethoscope. The younger student, sitting on a gym floor, holds the earpieces to her ears with a look of curious wonder as she listens to a heartbeat.
A group of elementary students lean in with excitement, pointing and cheering as a high school culinary student in a red chef’s coat and white apron whisks a bowl of frosting or batter.
A high school student sits at a table displaying a mix of Automotive and Carpentry tools, including a circular saw and an engine piston. He explains the different mechanical career paths to elementary students wearing yellow safety vests.
Close-up of an elementary student focused intently on using a power drill to drive a screw into a wooden frame during a Carpentry demonstration, while a high school mentor provides guidance.
A high school Computer Engineering student shows a small electronic component to an elementary student. The table is spread with hardware including a motherboard, a power supply unit, and a Snap Circuits kit for hands-on learning.
Our CTEC students had a blast visiting Haw River Elementary on Thursday (April 16) to share all the cool hands-on programs we offer! It was awesome seeing the younger kids get excited about their future possibilities in everything from healthcare to construction.

We are excited to launch our All Hands on Deck campaign! We know that when students are in class, they are building the habits, relationships, and confidence they need to thrive. As we sail towards the end of the school year, we’ve set our sights on improved attendance district-wide! Every school has created incentives and celebrations for hitting this target! 🎯

Facts on Attendance:
📉 Missing just 2 days per month can cause a student to fall behind academically.
🎓 Strong attendance is the #1 predictor of reading at grade level and graduating on time.
🤝 Being in school every day builds the routines and social connections that help students succeed.

How Families Can Help:
✅ Set consistent bedtime and morning routines.
✅ Prepare backpacks and clothes the night before for a smooth start.
✅ Schedule appointments outside of school hours whenever possible.

We are "All Hands on Deck" to support our students, and we thank you for being partners in education! We know it takes a community to help a child thrive. This includes educators providing engaging lessons, parents ensuring a structured routine, and students putting in the effort. We need everyone working together to finish the year strong. If the waters are rough and you're facing barriers to getting your child to school on time, please reach out! We are to help. Our crew is stronger when we are all together! 🌊✨

ABSS will operate on a two-hour delay tomorrow, Friday, February 6. Temperatures are expected to be below 30-degrees and there are many wet roads that can freeze. The delay will allow for more daylight as everyone begins traveling in the morning. Staff and families are urged to use caution and give themselves extra time to get to school and work in the morning. As a reminder, these decisions are made with the safety of our staff and students in mind. We hope to be on a normal schedule next week!

Ante la posibilidad de condiciones climáticas invernales durante la noche, el distrito escolar de ABSS operará con un retraso de dos horas mañana, jueves 5 de febrero. Remote Learning Day with an image of Superintendent Dr. Fleming in a fictional snow setting
Thank you to all our students, teachers, and parents for working together this week during remote learning. Tomorrow, Friday, January 30, will be an Optional Workday. That means there will be no remote learning for students tomorrow. We’re doing this so we can save our very last remote learning day for any future weather events. There will be no athletic or after-school activities tomorrow. Friday, February 13th will now be a regular school day for students instead of a teacher workday. We appreciate you being so flexible and for making this week a success. Enjoy the long weekend, and we hope to see everyone back soon! Thank you, and stay safe.

Due to continued hazardous road conditions, we will transition to a Remote Learning Day on Tuesday, January 27. This means all schools and facilities will be closed for students and staff. Students should work on their remote learning assignments. No athletics or afterschool activities. Remote Learning Days are flexible school days where students work at their own pace on posted assignments, also known as asynchronous work. While there are no required live classes, teachers are available during optional office hours if students have questions. Students are expected to complete all activities and reach out to their teachers if they need assistance. Work is due within five days of returning to school. View/Download our Remote Learning Guide here: https://5il.co/3tij1

Today’s joint Board of Education meeting with local elected officials was a fantastic opportunity to put our students' work in the spotlight at the Career & Technical Education Center. Guests enjoyed a delicious breakfast prepared by Ms. Tiffany King’s culinary students, set among stunning floral arrangements from Southern Alamance High School’s nationally-recognized FFA Chapter Floriculture Team. The talent continued at the tables, where visitors received custom-carved nameplates from Mr. David Miles’ carpentry students and 3D-printed letters from Mr. Bothwell’s Technology and Engineering class. These projects are perfect examples of how our hands-on #ABSSCTE programs empower students to lead, create, and prepare for the future. We’ve also included the graphics from our meeting placemats to highlight the many CTE pathways available across the district! #ThisisABSS
