The Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS) is pleased to announce its commitment to proactively address the mental health needs of its students over the summer and beyond. In April 2023, the ABSS Board of Education approved the allocation of $147,000 in Mental Health Services using PRC 173 (ESSER Funding), showcasing the district's dedication to student well-being.

ABSS has partnered with three area mental health agencies to provide comprehensive services to our students: Renaissance Wellness Services, Solutions Community Support Agency, and Comprehensive Community Support.

These collaborative efforts enable the District to offer outpatient therapy and, in some cases, intensive in-home services at no charge to students throughout the summer.

Our ABSS Student Support Services team, comprising counselors, social workers, and nurses, has diligently identified students who predominantly suffer from depression and anxiety and referred them to these services. Once parental approval is obtained, students are connected with the appropriate mental health agencies.

“We have seen firsthand how depression and anxiety can impact a student's ability to learn and thrive academically. These mental health challenges often create barriers that hinder a student from reaching their full potential,” said Tiffany Foster, ABSS Lead Mental Health Specialist.

“By addressing their emotional well-being and providing comprehensive support, we are not only improving their mental health but also creating an environment where they can flourish academically.”

ABSS also secured a mental health grant from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) known as “ADS” or Adding Direct Support. This grant enables the District to partner with North Carolina State University to incorporate additional counselor interns during the school year. These interns will provide crucial services to students during regular school hours. ABSS was chosen as one of the eight school systems statewide based on the percentage of students who face economic disadvantages.

ABSS is undertaking further measures to address mental health needs within the district including:

1. Mental Health Summer Check-Up for Students & Families:

These one-hour sessions aim to equip families with the necessary resources and support to promote positive mental health.

2. Mental Health Summit:

ABSS will be hosting a Mental Health Summit on Tuesday, July 18, at Central Services.

Our goal is to foster partnerships with these agencies, thereby strengthening our support network for the upcoming school year.

As part of our commitment to cultivating a healthy and supportive work environment, we have also organized mental health sessions for our teachers and staff. These sessions cover topics such as mindfulness, physical fitness, and self-care, ensuring that our educators receive the necessary support to excel in their roles.

ABSS remains dedicated to prioritizing the mental health and well-being of our students and staff. By establishing strategic partnerships, implementing innovative programs, and providing ongoing support, we aim to create a nurturing educational environment that fosters success and resilience.
