The Alamance-Burlington School System is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Michael Mattia as the new Principal of Grove Park Elementary School. The appointment was approved at the recent Board of Education meeting.
Mr. Mattia brings more than a decade of educational leadership experience to his new role. He holds a Master of School Administration from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Science from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Since October 2021, he has served as Principal of E.K. Powe Elementary School, where he led the successful transition to an International Baccalaureate model and consistently achieved academic growth through data-informed strategies and intentional professional development.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Mattia served as Assistant Principal at both Pearsontown Elementary School and Mary Scroggs Elementary School, gaining extensive experience in managing daily operations, leading school improvement teams, implementing Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), and fostering positive school cultures. His background also includes experience as a middle school teacher and athletic director, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of education from multiple perspectives.
Mr. Mattia and his wife are parents of two children, with their oldest child currently attending elementary school within the ABSS district. His personal connection to the school system reinforces his commitment to serving the community he calls home. The district is confident that his track record of transformational leadership, focus on empowering teachers, and dedication to student and staff success make him an excellent fit for Grove Park Elementary. The appointment comes as Ms. Traci Horton retires after many years of dedicated service, and the district extends its gratitude for her contributions to ABSS and Grove Park Elementary.
