We are excited to begin the second quarter at Haw River Elementary! Our students have worked hard during the first nine weeks, and we look forward to continued growth, learning, and success. As we enter this new quarter, we encourage families to help students set goals, stay focused, and continue demonstrating our ROAR expectations: Respect, Ownership, Academics, and Resilience!
With cooler weather arriving, please make sure students are dressed appropriately for outdoor recess and changing temperatures. We also want to emphasize the importance of daily attendance and arriving at school on time. Every instructional minute matters, and consistent attendance helps students build strong academic foundations. Please continue encouraging positive behavior at school, on the bus, and at home. ¡Estamos muy entusiasmados por comenzar el segundo trimestre en la escuela primaria Haw River! We have officially reached **Week 9**, the final week of our first grading period! It is hard to believe how quickly the school year is moving. We are incredibly proud of the hard work, growth, and accomplishments of our Lion Cubs over these past nine weeks.
The pizza challenge has ended! We will have the grand totals for you soon! You all collected so much! We will announce the winner soon!
As we wrap up the grading period, we encourage families to continue emphasizing the importance of **daily attendance, arriving at school on time, and making positive choices**. Our Capturing Kids' Hearts character trait for October is **Self-Direct**, and we want our students to continue practicing responsibility, making good decisions, and taking ownership of their learning and behavior.

For All 1st, 3rd & 5th Grade Students
Our school will be conducting vision screenings for all 1st, 3rd and 5th grade students beginning the week of October 19th, 2026.
Screening Schedule
Vision screenings will take place throughout October and November.
Not all classes will be screened on the same day.
Students’ screening dates will vary by class.
Want to Opt Out?
Parents/guardians who do not want their child to participate in the vision screening must send a written note to their child’s teacher requesting that their child opt out.

We have officially completed eight weeks of learning, growing, and making memories! As we continue through October, we are focusing on our Capturing Kids' Hearts character trait, Self-Direct. We encourage our Lion Cubs to take responsibility for their actions, make positive choices, and stay focused on their goals, both at school and at home.
Hispanic Heritage Spirit week begins as we close out our month long celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. We can't wait to see the outfits this week!
Families, please continue reinforcing positive behavior, especially on the school bus, where safety, respect, and following directions are essential. We also encourage you to prioritize daily attendance and arriving at school on time, as every minute of learning matters!

Due to bus drivers being out this afternoon, we will have to dismiss bus riders for 87 early. We will begin dismissal around 2:00pm

🍕 Pizza Challenge: Don’t forget to send in money so your child’s class can participate in the Pizza Challenge! Every contribution helps your class work toward winning the challenge.
🌎 Hispanic Heritage Spirit Week | October 12–16: Get ready for a fun-filled week celebrating Hispanic heritage and culture! Students can show their spirit by participating in our daily themed activities.
🛼 Skate Night | October 20: Mark your calendars! Join us for a fun night of skating, laughter, and family time. We hope to see everyone there!
🚌 Bus Changes: Please be aware that we have several bus route changes. As a result, some buses may be leaving later than usual. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make sure all students get home safely.
📚 Self-Direct: We will also be focusing on Self-Direct, encouraging our students to take ownership of their learning, choices, and behavior. Families can help by encouraging students to set goals, make responsible choices, and reflect on their progress.
🍂 Cooler Weather: The weather is getting cooler! Please make sure your child comes to school dressed appropriately for the changing temperatures. Layers are a great option as mornings may be chilly while temperatures warm up throughout the day.
