This year marks the 6th year that Sylvan has hosted the African Dance and Drumming artists, the "Simar Center for Performing Arts"(SCPA) which is a family company, started and headed up by Greg and Shaliah Ince. The artists are originally from New York but currently reside in Burlington. The performance company specializes in West African rhythms, played on the Djembe and Dunun drums, and correlating traditional West African dances. The artists teach these rhythms and dances, as well as the associated culture, terminology and history, to all Sylvan students all week long during specials, providing a cultural arts immersion experience for the entire school. Fifth graders work especially hard, engaging in extra time with SCPA as they learn and rehearse specific West African Dances and Djembe accompaniment. At the end of the week, all 5th grade students perform in a school-wide assembly for students and 5th grade families led by SCPA!
