There is so much to celebrate at Sylvan! 💙🐦⚾ Our data shows meaningful growth, especially in reading, overall growth, and outcomes for our EDS students—and we are incredibly proud of the hard work behind those numbers!
Do we still have work to do? Absolutely—and we’re already stepping up to the plate! We’re focused, we’re making adjustments, and we’re committed to getting better for our Blue Jays. But today, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the growth, recognize the progress, and thank our students, staff, and families who made it possible!
⚾ One Team. One Goal. Step Up to the Plate!
💙 Keep growing, Blue Jays!

Blue Jay families, we’ve had a great start to the year, but our attendance data also tells an important story. We have only been in school for 10 days, and collectively our students have already missed 28,150 minutes of instruction—that’s more than 469 HOURS of learning. That’s a lot of valuable classroom time in just two weeks.
The cause-and-effect is simple: More time at school ➡️ More instruction ➡️ More opportunities to learn ➡️ More opportunities to grow.
We can have amazing teachers, strong instruction, and great support systems—but we can’t teach them if they aren’t here, and they can’t grow if they aren’t here to learn.
We know illnesses and unavoidable circumstances happen. But when students are healthy and able to attend, we need them here, on time, and staying for the full school day.
Let’s work together to change those numbers! 💙
⚾ Be here. Be on time. Stay all day.
Every day matters. Every minute matters. Every Blue Jay matters.

⚾️🚗 WELL, WELL, WELL… LOOK WHO WENT BACK-TO-BACK! 😏🏆
Yesterday we asked, “Can we do it again tomorrow?”
Apparently, our Blue Jay families said, “Hold our coffee.” ☕️😂
For the SECOND morning in a row, our car rider line was CLEAR before 7:50 AM! 🙌💨
Kids ready. Backpacks ready. Parents ready. Staff hustling. And that car line? GONE. 👋😂
We see you, Blue Jays! 👀💙 Thank you to our families, students, and staff for proving that when One Team steps up to the plate, we can get it DONE!
🏆 BACK-TO-BACK CAR LINE CHAMPS!
Now the real question is…
Do we dare go for THREE?! 😏⚾️
#OneTeamOneGoal #StepUpToThePlate #CarLineChamps #BlueJayPride

Would you LOOK at that beautiful sight?! 👀🙌
7:48 AM and our car rider line was EMPTY! 🎉🎉🎉
Backpacks ready. 🎒
Shoes on. 👟
Seatbelts off. ✔️
Kids ready to roll. 🚗💨
Parents understood the assignment. 💯
Staff kept the line moving like a well-oiled machine! 👏
When everybody comes to the plate ready to go, THIS is what happens! ⚾️
Huge THANK YOU to our Blue Jay families, students, and staff for working together to make arrival safe, smooth, and FAST this morning!
🏆 Car Line Score: BLUE JAYS – 1 | Traffic – 0
Now…can we go back-to-back tomorrow?! 😂💙

🚧 Roofing Project Update! 🚧
Our roofing project begins tomorrow! As work gets underway, please remember that there will be no parking behind the school until further notice. K–5 car rider and bus arrival/dismissal will continue as normal with no changes to those procedures.
🚌 K–5: Arrival & dismissal remain the same
💙 Pre-K: Arrival & dismissal will temporarily take place in the gym
Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we make these important improvements to our school! Please use extra caution around campus while construction is underway. 🏫💙

Our Week 2 Challenge: Let’s keep that momentum going! Be here. Be on time. Be ready to learn. Because every day matters, every minute matters, and EVERY BLUE JAY MATTERS! 💙⚾

"I am excited to join the Sylvan Elementary School community as a school counselor. As a licensed school counselor who has worked with every grade level K-12, I am passionate about helping students feel seen, supported, and confident as they grow academically, socially, and emotionally. I look forward to partnering with students, families, and staff to help every Sylvan Blue Jay soar. Outside of school, I enjoy shopping, having adventures with my family, and exploring nature."

We are proud of Christine Harris and the work she’s taken on through the Teacher Leader Alliance. More than 140 educators across the Piedmont applied this year, and only 15 were selected—an exceptional honor for her and our school. The Alliance supports educators who want to strengthen their leadership and use improvement science to solve real problems by starting small, learning quickly, and using evidence to guide decisions. Below is a brief summary of her work at our school. Christine wanted her students to grow as fluent, confident readers, so she built her change idea around repeated reading and weekly oral‑reading checks. Students practiced rereading grade‑level text three days a week and tracked their own words‑correct‑per‑minute, helping them see their progress in real time. Over the cycle, several students made clear gains! Way to STEP UP TO THE PLATE!

This school year, Sylvan Elementary will be using OpenGate metal detectors as part of our arrival procedures. The process is quick, respectful, and designed to help ensure a safe start to every school day. Thank you to our families, students, staff, and visitors for your patience and partnership as we work together to keep our school community safe.

"Hey everyone! My name is Yasmine Benitez. I am an education major at ACC! I love meeting new people and making new connections. I am excited to get to know everyone and share new experiences with you!"

"I am excited to be at Sylvan because as a tutor last year, I saw firsthand what a loving, nurturing environment it is for the teachers and students and I want to be a part of that. This year I look forward to watching last year's third graders turn into next year's fifth graders as we learn and grow together! I am so excited to be a part of that journey with them!"
