The North Carolina Highway Patrol, Alamance County Sheriff’s Department, Alamance EMS, and other local agencies hosted a Prom Promise event this week at Southern High School to warn students of the dangers of drinking and driving ahead of the upcoming prom season.

Prom Promise is a national campaign that encourages high school students to make responsible choices on prom night, including avoiding underage drinking and distracted driving. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of reckless behavior and to reduce the number of car accidents involving young people.

A mock car crash was set up on the school’s ball field with a simulation of a student’s car hitting a tree.  The student driver and his date had to be extricated from the vehicle and rushed to the hospital.  EMS workers were on site explaining the time it takes and how people often die as a result of injuries in these crashes.

“We just want to promote responsible decision-making and ensure that students have a safe and memorable prom night,” said Lt. Brandon Mays, Alamance Co. Sheriff’s Department.
