Alexander Wilson celebrated its 100th anniversary Saturday with an alumni breakfast, old fashioned carnival, classic cars, food, music, and lots of reminiscing.

The school’s oldest living alumna Martha Covington, who is 99, attended the festivities.

“I graduated from here in 1940 when it was Alexander Wilson High School.  I came over here from Hawfields in the 6th grade.   I’ll be 100 on October 15th,” she said.  “I’m blessed to be here!”

Students transformed classrooms into what they called decade rooms highlighting each of the decades’ toys, electronics, and even grocery store prices from the 1920s to today.

Attendees also had a chance to walk down memory lane and explore old year books and school memorabilia.

As for the next 100 years, the school had everyone who attended put their thumbprint and sign a giant mural that will be displayed on campus.

The school is named after Dr. Alexander Wilson, a prominent Irishman who settled in Alamance County and later opened a school in his home not far from the school’s current site.   It is now one of 20 elementary schools serving students in Alamance-Burlington Schools.
